Wideshot kangaroos        \u003cbr/\u003eAs concerns grow about the environment, global warming and the damaging effects that tourism can have on a community or region, many tourists are choosing to holiday in a more sustainable manner. \u003cbr/\u003eOften called eco-tourism or volunteer tourism, the number of travellers taking the challenge to give something back to their holiday destination is increasing. \u003cbr/\u003eIn an eco-holiday with a difference, tourists to the Australian state of Victoria are helping rangers at the Grampians National Park carry out one of the most extensive research programmes ever conducted into the impact on fauna after a major fire.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt's their first visit to the Grampians National Park in Victoria, but for this group of holidaymakers this is no sight-seeing trip - it's a conservation mission.  \u003cbr/\u003eNo longer content with viewing Australia's native animals in a zoo, tourists are finding unique ways to get up close and personal in their natural habitats.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006 half the Grampians were devastated by bushfires, destroying much of the shelter for tiny mammals.   \u003cbr/\u003ePark ranger, Mike Stevens, is now carrying out a monitoring study to see how much un-burnt habitat is needed for the animal populations to re-stabilise after severe fire damage.   \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 300 traps have been set across 20-kilometres (12 miles) of the fire-affected parkland.   \u003cbr/\u003eChecking them used to take three rangers all day but with the help of volunteers, it now takes four to five hours.   \u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers also help the rangers weigh, microchip and identify the sex of captured animals before releasing them back into the bush.   \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a good chance to observe Australia's wildlife at close hand, much of which are normally nocturnal.   \u003cbr/\u003eMike Stevens says that mammals are popular creatures, especially in Australia where many species are unique. \u003cbr/\u003eConservation Volunteers Australia co-ordinates the mammal-monitoring trip.   \u003cbr/\u003eJoanne Davies, the coordinator for the group, says over the last few years she has seen a trend towards holidays like the one her company offers.\u003cbr/\u003eShe calls it volunteer tourism, or just \"volo-tourism\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe volunteers stay at a nearby Eco youth hostel, with solar power, compost and a grey water system. It even has its own native wildflower garden and chickens.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight of the trip for many is getting a ranger's-eye view of the park. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a backstage pass to the Grampians.   \u003cbr/\u003eLaura Pomorin, one of the volunteers described the trip as different to any other trip away, giving her the chance to become up close and personal with the rangers and the wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eWorking with Australian animals, however, is a bit of a lottery. The final tally after a full day of trapping, is just two house mice.   \u003cbr/\u003eStevens says that although they may not be as popular as native Australian mammals like kangaroos or koalas, they are a good indicator that the habitat is recovering after the fire. \u003cbr/\u003eFortunately today there are also plenty of Eastern grey kangaroos to
