see the last pieces of the iconic symbol can get a hi-tech multimedia walking tour highlighting key points where the 166-kilometre long (103 mile) wall once stood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hand-sized minicomputer is linked to GPS (global positioning satellites) mapping the Berlin Wall's former path.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has a headset and a touch-screen and features a colourful map of the city that can zoom in and out, showing the users where they are. \u003cbr/\u003eThe route of the former wall between East and West Germany is marked in red while a yellow line guides the visitor from one wall section to the next, calculating the distances via GPS in metres.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city government commissioned the multimedia guide as part of a bigger project to improve existing memorials to the wall, most of which were torn down after Communist East Germany collapsed and the border was opened in 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eApart from guiding tourists from one wall memorial to the next, the digital assistant give information about the twenty two historically significant spots along the wall's route.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tour includes the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the mural-covered East Side Gallery. \u003cbr/\u003eRosemarie Wirthmueller, Antenna Audio's managing director for NW Europe says the device brings history to life and gives a sense of the atomsphere of that period. \u003cbr/\u003eAudio files and video documentaries give an overview of the wall's dramatic Cold War history, starting on Aug. 13, 1961, when East Germany began building the barrier to wall off the capitalist enclave of West Berlin in an effort to stop a westward exodus from the communist state.\u003cbr/\u003ePassing through Brandenburg Gate, users can listen and watch US President Ronald Reagan peering over the wall as he made his famous 1987 speech challenging then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to \"tear down this wall!\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Walk the Wall\" guide comes in German and English, but in the future it may be offered in other languages as well.\u003cbr/\u003eWirthmueller says that tourists are freed from the regime of tour guides and also helps them to get around the city. \u003cbr/\u003eStarting on May 1, the wall guides can be rented at five booths located throughout the city. \u003cbr/\u003eThey will cost between �6-�15 ($9.56- $23.91) depending on how long visitors want to use them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project is scheduled for completion by 13 August 13, 2011, the 50th anniversary of the wall's construction.\u003cbr/\u003eAntenna Audio, which is a subsidiary of Discovery Communications Inc., also offers digital tour guides for 450 museums and archaeological sites across the globe, but none of them come with GPS so far. \u003cbr/\u003eIt took a team of historians and computer experts one year and �500,000 ($797,000) to develop the current software but as of now there are no concrete plans to use similar GPS-conntected devices in other
