But they're still clamouring for jobs and rail against the official chicanery that drove a local fruit vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, to set himself on fire.
That desperate act on December 17 sparked a wave of anti-government protests that brought down Tunisia's long time ruler, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, in less than a month.
The revolt inspired others who toppled an autocratic president in Egypt, set off an armed rebellion in Libya and rattled governments in Yemen, Bahrain and elsewhere.
In Sidi Bouzid, a town of 40,000 in Tunisia's central plain, disillusionment has largely replaced the euphoria of overthrowing a corrupt government.
Unemployed young men spend their days playing cards in coffee shops, dreaming of sneaking into Europe. Since the overthrow of Ben Ali, thousands have attempted the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean in old fishing boats.
Job seekers throng the local governor's office, just yards from where Bouazizi turned himself into a human torch, to try to press crumpled CVs and college diplomas into the hands officials.
The office compound is protected by barbed wire and military guards; officials say that's necessary to deter angry crowds from storming it.
But for those waiting outside the gates - some come every day and try for hours to get someone's attention - the barriers send a negative message.
"It is our right to speak directly with him (the governor), why we have to pass our papers in this way and then they will put them in the garbage, as the previous government used to do. Mouldi, 46, is a jobless father of three.
But the deputy regional governor of Sidi Bouzid, Ali Rahal, said the local government is trying to make improvements.
"We want to bring investment to Sidi Bouzid. It can cost several thousand US dollars for a middleman and the captain.
The protests across the Arab world have some common roots: anger against official corruption and political oppression, a 'youth bulge' that meant economies couldn't grow fast enough to provide jobs for all, and rising expectations as a result of better education and widespread Internet access.
Bouazizi became an unlikely hero for disillusioned young people across the region.
For the past seven years, he had been the family's main breadwinner, selling fruit from his pushcart.
On December 17, municipal inspectors confiscated his scales and his wares, on grounds that he did not have a vending permit, said his mother, Manoubiyeh.
She said one of the inspectors also slapped him in public.
Incensed by the humiliation, Bouazizi asked to complain to the governor, but was ignored, his mother said.
He then doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire outside the governor's office.
He suffered severe burns and died on January 4.
"I hope that
