General shots of wetlands in the Camargue\u003cbr/\u003eThe Camargue in southern France is one of Europe's most important wetland sites. \u003cbr/\u003eThe flat marshy land is famous for white horses, rice, bulls, salt and pink flamingos. \u003cbr/\u003eEach year thousands of the elegant birds visit to breed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this year not one flamingo chick has hatched in the Camargue. \u003cbr/\u003eGreater flamingos are tall elegant pink birds, which favour salty waters, so the saline rich waters of the Camargue  is a favourite breeding site for around 20 thousand birds each year according to Wetlands International. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the 2007 breeding season between February and June has failed to produce any eggs. \u003cbr/\u003eAlan Johnson, is an ornithologist and the Wetlands International Flamingo Specialist. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has been studying the birds in this region for forty years. \u003cbr/\u003eJohnson says that this year the birds failed to find a suitable site and did not breed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe usual salt water lake 'etang du Fangassier' which is the preferred site of the greater flamingos remained dry this year. \u003cbr/\u003eNormally the birds flock to the island of 'Ilot de Fangassier', a man made island, constructed in collaboration with the local salt company, thirty years ago as a refuge for the greater flamingos.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe fate of salt production and greater flamingos are inextricably linked here. \u003cbr/\u003eA wave of strikes at the local salt company Salines de Giraud over plans to make over a hundred staff redundant and reduce productivity meant that the lagoons where the salt is formed were not flooded with sea water in early spring. \u003cbr/\u003eThey lay dry and sterile, resulting in no breeding site for the flamingos.  \u003cbr/\u003eUnion leader George Argelif says his members can not be blamed for the failure of the greater flamingos to breed. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says there were some rumours of sabotage, but that is not the unions responsibility. \u003cbr/\u003eEstablished as a national park and nature reserve in 1972, the Parc Regional de Camargue covers 820 kmďż˝ \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the land belonging to Salines de Giraud is private and not protected, the only restrictions is that buildings can not be built on the sea front. \u003cbr/\u003eDemand for land by ever-increasing human populations puts pressure on the vital wetlands which are depended upon by a huge variety of species.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau  the flamingos seem very content , ignoring the visiting school children. \u003cbr/\u003eOne visitor says she is astounded by their beauty, especially as they deploy their wings. \u003cbr/\u003eArnaud Bechet, is an ornithologist with 'La tour du Valat', a research centre for the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that at the end of the sixties the flamingos failed to breed and that led to the creation of 'Ilot de Fangassier', a man made island, constructed in collaboration with the local salt company, as a suitable nesting place where they could be safe from predators. \u003cbr/\u003eBechet says that until this year the island provided refuge for ten thousand breeding pairs. \u003cbr/\u003eAlan Johnson says that one year's failure to produce offspring is not a catastrophe for the flamingos, but if they were to fail to breed next year it could become a crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are is estimated to be between 545,000 and 680,000, greater flamingos in the world today, the total number of
