Bearded men in long, traditional robes filled the hall to attend a lecture organised...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eAn ultraconservative Islamist party on Sunday held a conference in a rural town outside Cairo to rally support for Egypt's draft national constitution. \u003cbr/\u003eBearded men in long, traditional robes filled the hall to attend a lecture organised by the Al-Nour Salafi party entitled \"Know Your Constitution.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAnd what these Islamists know about their constitution is that they will support it - even if some may privately dislike it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new charter, written mainly by liberals and backed by the military, would ban political parties based on religion, give women equal rights and protect the status of minority Christians.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conference highlighted a striking alliance that has emerged since the military toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his democratically elected government last summer. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth the military-backed authorities and the Al-Nour Salafi party appear to be benefiting from it, despite the awkwardness.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authorities get a seal of approval from a popular Islamist party for a constitution drafted by a liberal-dominated committee they appointed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe charter, despite its progressive ambitions, accords the military special status by allowing it to select its own candidate for the job of defence minister and empowering it to bring civilians before military tribunals.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Al-Nour Salafi secures a safe spot for itself - and perhaps even a hand in power - amid a relentless media campaign against Islamist groups and an intensive crackdown that has left thousands of Morsi's supporters behind bars or killed during violent clashes.\u003cbr/\u003eStatements from party leaders and senior clerics suggest they realise the government's campaign has been effective. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The amended version of the 2012 constitution protected the article of Islamic Shariah and identity,\" said Ashraf Thabet, a senior member of Al-Nour Salafi party, on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eEgypt's more than 52 (m) million voters will decide during a referendum on Tuesday and Wednesday whether to support the amendments to the constitution initially drafted under Morsi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe military overthrew Morsi in a popularly backed coup on July 3 and two panels dominated by secular-leaning politicians and legal experts later rewrote the document.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile presenting the new draft last month, the chairman of the 50-member panel that drafted a new constitution had urged Morsi's supporters to participate in the referendum on the charter.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The constitution in all its chapters and articles deals with and leads to a civil administration, talks about a civil administration, a civil government, a civil rule,\" Amr Moussa had said during a news conference in December.\u003cbr/\u003eA large turnout and a strong \"yes\" vote would give legitimacy and a boost to a military-backed plan for presidential and parliamentary elections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe amendments have been welcomed by women's activist, Ghada Al Adhamy, who works for a multinational company.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 47-year-old Cairo resident was able to witness history taking place in Tahrir Square, from the comfort of her own balcony.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Adhamy advocates the empowerment of women and dreams of a better future for Egypt under the newly written constitution. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist organisations have called for a boycott of the referendum.\u003cbr/\u003eBrotherhood supporters have been holding protests and on Sunday, stepped up confrontations in the streets, ahead of the vote.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have been cracking down on people trying to distribute pamphlets calling for a \"no\" vote, mostly on grounds they were representatives of the Brotherhood.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is irony there: during Morsi's term many blamed Salafis for radicalising his group and insisting on more Islamic-based legislation.\u003cbr/\u003eJanuary 10, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
