Wide shot Vatican \u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe heads of Roman Catholic religious orders on Wednesday acknowledged reports of sexual abuse of nuns by priests, but said the overwhelming majority are faithful to their vows.\u003cbr/\u003eVatican officials have acknowlegded that Roman Catholic nuns have been sexually abused by priests in Africa, but say the problem is limited to a few, isolated cases.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problem came to light this week in an American publication, the National Catholic Reporter, but most of the information is contained in a 1994 report written by a missionary nun in Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eThe author of the document, Sister Maura O'Donohue, was not available for comment. \u003cbr/\u003ePhone calls to missionary organisations mentioned in her report went unanswered.\u003cbr/\u003eThe original report says that priests afraid of contracting AIDS sometimes turn to young nuns, who are seen as \"safe\" sexual partners.\u003cbr/\u003eNuns who become pregnant are often forced to leave their orders, while the priests involved are allowed to continue their ministries, according to the magazine story. \u003cbr/\u003eIn some cases, priests impregnated nuns, then encouraged them to have abortions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe National Catholic Reporter said there are no comprehensive statistics on the sexual abuse of nuns, but the \"frequency and consistency of the reports ... point to a problem that needs to be addressed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRev.
