GoPro camera footage of Stare taking son Loren out of bathroom\u003cbr/\u003eSome mothers in Brooklyn, New York are saying no to diapers and adopting an alternative way of potty training their babies.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, they say, it's not a new idea, it's been around for centuries, in other cultures across the world.\u003cbr/\u003eMost people start potty training their child around the age of two, but for some parents in Brooklyn, that's way too late.\u003cbr/\u003eEnter the phrase \"elimination communication\" or \"EC,\" the basic tenets of which state that babies should be diaper-less as much as possible. \u003cbr/\u003eAdriane Stare, owner of baby Caribou Baby, a natural parenting store in New York, potty trained both her sons from infancy using EC. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she started with her older son.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Every time he would go potty in his diaper or outside of a diaper, which they do a lot when they're newborns when you're changing them, or whatever, I'd make a noise to cue him, to let him know that he was going, so if he peed I'd say 'oh you just peed, ssssss!'\" she explains.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And then by two or three weeks, when I would give him that same cue noise and hold him over a potty he might go pee if he had to go then.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFans of EC say they can tell when their baby \"needs to go\" by cues and will be able to rush to a toilet or sink in time.\u003cbr/\u003eStare says she learned to recognise that her 4-month son Loren would get a far away look in his face when he needed to go.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Caribou Baby in Brooklyn, New York, regular meet-ups are held to educate parents in EC. \u003cbr/\u003e\"After coming to the meet up I thought to myself why don't I try to see if I can take her over and take her out of the diaper and if she'll go,\" says Leah O'Donnell, mother of toddler Ada.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And she did, and she really took to it. And because we don't recognise that they're telling us that, then basically they stop communicating with us about it and they just start going in the diaper,\" says Sarah Longwell-Stevens. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So if you teach them to go in their diaper then when you take the diaper off in a year, two years, three years, then you have this whole different effort. Whereas if from birth, you're teaching them what the potty is for and how to use the potty.\" \u003cbr/\u003eParents also argue that the method reduces the number of diapers in landfills, as well as results in a decrease in diaper rash and urinary infections.\u003cbr/\u003eThis method of diaper-less child rearing is not a new concept, and is practiced in many poor countries where access to diapers is limited. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some paediatricians are against the concept potty training so young and hope parents don't take adopt the practice on a wide scale.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are potential psychological stressors for the baby. If you misread the signals from the baby and you're constantly putting the baby on the potty, then you're not allowing the baby to develop the types of skills that the baby should be developing,\" says Dr. Deb Lonzer, a paediatrician at Cleveland Clinic. \u003cbr/\u003eParents who have embraced the method say they recognise it's not for everyone, but claim it is a great bonding experience between mother and baby, as the mother learns to read the child's emotional cues. \u003cbr/\u003eO'Donnell, who has raised her daughter Ada using EC, says it also helps with her daughter's personal development and experience.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I like that we're listening to her need and also that it's stayed as a part of our relationship and as a part of her experience is that 'I'm doing this.
