Man moving boxes \u003cbr/\u003eA businessman from Bandung in Indonesia described his struggle, 10 years after an economic crash nearly ruined his garment manufacturing business. \u003cbr/\u003eSixty-two-year-old Danny Lukita walks the factory floor at his family's sole business, Fit U Garments, everyday, closely involved in every aspect of production.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1988, when he started making clothes, he was optimistic.  Under Indonesia's President Suharto the country was one of the emerging Asian tigers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut almost a decade later the Asian Financial Crisis hit Indonesia, crippling many regional economies and driving down the value of local currencies.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the 4 to 500 per cent drop in the Rupiah should have made exporting easier, buyers lost confidence in dealing with Indonesia and Lukita's business suffered.\u003cbr/\u003eLukita barely clung to financial health during that period.  However, he made some changes and survived.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he couldn't afford to pay his electric bill, Lukita made a deal with a neighbouring factory to buy some of their steam power equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also started training the employees so he didn't have to find managers from outside Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's been a struggle for us, while we have to do production and training at the same time, and of course it's more costly,\" said Lukita.\u003cbr/\u003eA decade after the crisis Lukita now has 3,000 employees producing 350-thousand articles of clothing a month.\u003cbr/\u003eFit U Garments ships its merchandise to the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea and neighbour Malaysia.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for the last three years Lukita has faced a new problem, as wages have gone up 15 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe minimum wage is now about 95 US dollars per month, as politicians have responded to growing inflation and rising fuel prices.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has reduced Lukita's profits, but he remains optimistic that the current government will make some adjustments to help his industry.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The garment industry in Indonesia is still open wide but we need a few changes especially in the labour laws, and in the security sector we still need improvements,\" Lukita said.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials from the current administration take credit for creating a good business environment, but also appear to praise the previous regimes of Megawati Sukarnoputri, Abdurrahman Wahid and B.J. Habibie for creating a stable situation.\u003cbr/\u003eThere have been some worries in Southeast Asia that another shock could come.\u003cbr/\u003eWith Indonesia, rules regarding natural resources have been tightened, and the government of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has made a priority of prosecuting corruption.\u003cbr/\u003eSo officials feel they have done what it takes to prevent a repeat of a decade ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Overall I think the government has been trying very hard in the past ten years.  We've already re-established the stability.  We are ready to move forward to sustain a higher and healthier growth.
