We contacted a hospital in the UK, we were having troubles trying to get donors because of the law. seafood and great beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now a new type of visitor, infertile couples from across Europe hoping for a child. \u003cbr/\u003eSpain is becoming a popular destination for infertile couples forced to seek treatment abroad triggered by the difficulties in finding eggs or sperm donors in their countries.\u003cbr/\u003eBarcelona's fame as a fertility hotspot was spread via word of mouth and via the internet\u003cbr/\u003eLow cost flights and the city's tourist facilities means that couples can travel easily and frequently between their home country and the catalan capital. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Raul Olivares, a fertility expert at the Instituto Marques clinic says that half the patients he says are from northern Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eInstituto Marques is one of the most important fertility clinics in Spain with headquarters in Barcelona and branches across Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eSome Spanish clinics have begun to target Eastern Europeans as potential donors in order to match the physical characteristics of their northern European patients. \u003cbr/\u003eOlivares says that is important for both the parents and children that there is some physical similarity. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the donors are paid, one woman, Elena, who had just donated eggs, said that she was motivated by the desire to help childless couples. \u003cbr/\u003eAP Television spoke to one British couple who had travelled to Barcelona for fertility treatment, they asked us to protect their identity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe couple say their experience has been much easier in Spain than it was in the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eThe high demand for IVF treatment in the United Kingdom means that couples may have to wait several years for find a suitable donor...more liberal and efficient procedures in Spain help patients to find donors within weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eIn April 2005 the United Kingdom government passed law giving children conceived as a result of fertility treatment the right to know the identity of their biological parents. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then the number of British couples travelling to Spain in the hope of conceiving his doubled. \u003cbr/\u003eDonor anonymity is protected in Spain, but Elena admits to being a little curious about any child conceived from her eggs. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Juan Alvarez is a professor at Harvard University and expert in masculine infertility in the US and Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eHe travels frequently to Catalonia as an advisor to local clinics.\u003cbr/\u003eAlvarez says the system is much easier in Europe than in the US where there is a demand for donors to be college graduates and even movie stars. \u003cbr/\u003eBarcelona has over ten fertility clinics, which have carried out about 5,000 treatments in the last year.
