Boat sailing along river\u003cbr/\u003eAs the world waits for the celestial spectacle of a total solar eclipse on Wednesday, the holy Indian city of Varanasi along the banks of the revered Ganges river is preparing for a day of prayers .\u003cbr/\u003eIt promises to be a spectacular dawn , turning the city of light into a city of darkness.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso known as Banaras or Kashi , Varanasi is one of the most sacred pilgrimage places in Hindu religion and home of Lord Shiva, believed to be the creator and destroyer of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe river is worshipped both at sunrise and sunset with ritual cleansing everyday and Hindu devotees plan to hold traditional fire rituals as the city is plunged into darkness during the eclipse.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the steps leading upto the river , known as ' Ghats, ' devotees and tourists line up to take a holy dip hoping to rid their bodies and minds of all the sins and attain spiritual nirvana.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the oldest cities in India , Varanasi has been a living embodiment of India's ancient civilisation and its cultural and religious traditions for thousands of years.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally though , the conservative Indians are rather superstitious about the solar eclipse and consider it as a bad omen. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Hindu mythology, eclipses are blamed on a vengeful demon, angry with both the moon and the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eMany religious-minded people observe a fast , organise special prayers and prefer not to step out for the duration of what they believe is an 'evil' phenomenon.\u003cbr/\u003ePregnant women are advised to remain indoors and many temples remain closed.\u003cbr/\u003eSukhdevdas Mahatyagi , an Indian holy man, warned the eclipse would herald a third river bank in Varanasi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe eclipse watchers are hoping that the monsoon clouds or rains do not play the spoiler when the natural blackout unfolds.   \u003cbr/\u003eIt will first appear at dawn in India's Gulf of Khambhat just north of the metropolis of Mumbai.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will move east across India, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China before hitting the Pacific. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eclipse will cross some southern Japanese islands and be visible last from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. \u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere, a partial eclipse will be visible in much of Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eFor astronomers, it will be a chance for a prolonged view of the sun's corona, a white ring 600-thousand miles (1 (m) million kilometres) from the sun's surface. \u003cbr/\u003eThe last total eclipse, in August 2008, was two minutes and 27 seconds.\u003cbr/\u003eThis one will last 6 minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists are hoping data from the eclipse will help explain solar flares and other structures of the sun and why they erupt, according to a said a NASA astrophysicist who will be following the eclipse in China.\u003cbr/\u003eMan has been recording solar eclipses for 4,000 years, and even today they inspire a combination of fear, fascination and
