The containers which were transporting logs were confiscated before departure, and some game scouts from the Department of Agriculture who were involved, were suspended. Beissel and the rangers atop a mountain overlooking Miombo forest\u003cbr/\u003eThe Miombo forest stretches across East Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eWith more than 160 different tree species, it's rich in biodiversity.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the woodland is diminishing due to local firewood and charcoal production, as well as commercial timber activities - much of it illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eWar in Mozambique set back development in this south east African nation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with the stability that has come in recent years, vast tracts of the Miombo forest are being exploited by commercial timber merchants.\u003cbr/\u003eLogging has been taking place for some time within the 7500 square kilometre Quirimbas National Park in northern Mozambique.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a region attractive to loggers for its infrastructure, despite falling within a protected area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 36,000 hectare Mareja Community Conservation Project falls within the Quirimbas National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eThis project is trying to bring the illegal loggers to book.\u003cbr/\u003eDominik Beissel and his family (originally from Germany) have been involved in plantation timber through the centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eBeissel came across the ruins of a German Aristocrat's farmhouse, by chance, while exploring the area 12 years ago, to investigate a logging operation.\u003cbr/\u003eHe went on to partially restore the farmhouse and offer accommodation in separate outbuildings.\u003cbr/\u003eBeissel says the forests are under pressure from hunting and logging.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's miombo forest, it's coastal forest, coastal savannahs - all habitats that are becoming extremely rare in East Africa. But numbers are reducing sharply now with uncontrolled hunting of course, and the preparation of access into the forests by logging,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a general economic upturn since the war ended in the early nineteen nineties, the search for raw materials, particularly timber, has seriously been affecting the area. \u003cbr/\u003eBeissel started the Mareja Community Conservation Project with the establishment of the Quirimbas National Park in 2002.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe project is a 50/50 partnership with the local community.\u003cbr/\u003eNine community members are now accredited Mozambican National Parks Rangers.\u003cbr/\u003eThey raise funds through an innovative method, as ranger Ali Bacar explains: \"We receive 50% of accommodation fees. In addition we receive a fee for every animal spotted, paid by the visitor.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe rangers take visitors on walks through the Miombo forests, explaining flora and fauna, as they go along.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitor Suzan Esteves says the guides bring the forests to life. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm from Canada where we have quite a lot of green space, but there's something quite different about the wildness of it here and the fact that� I mean it's new to me and it's something special. They really know not just factual information of plant species etcetera and animals and such, but actually the history and stories of culture and politics.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut while tourism is a source of income, the challenging work for these rangers has been catching the loggers who are acting illegally in Quirimbas National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eOperating through local loggers, Chinese timber merchants have been responsible for the large-scale destruction of selected Miombo hardwoods.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the dense foliage of the rainy season, logging operations have slowed down, but look closer and there are obvious signs of destruction. \u003cbr/\u003eOne one occasion Beissel struck lucky.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was a local guy from Pemba, otherwise a taxi driver, and he had an operation with� well it was a joint operation of course, supplying the Chinese. And he was operating in the area for several months before we actually caught him. That was the very first truck - first loaded truck - that we caught,\" says Beissel.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a study carried out by Mozambique's Eduardo Mondlane University in 2005, 60% of the forest is endangered due to insufficient or no regeneration caused by deforestation.\u003cbr/\u003eLoggers choose the healthiest and biggest trees, which weakens the forest's ability to withstand fires.\u003cbr/\u003eThis, coupled with highly combustible re-growth following deforestation, results in big fires destroying the remaining forest.\u003cbr/\u003eJose Dias dos Santos Mohamede is Chief Park Warden of the Quirimbas National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the park is trying to stop the illegal export of timber. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There was a case of containers at the Pemba harbour being used by a Chinese timber company whose name I don't recall. That timber was destined for China or Hong Kong.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as the recent incident at Pemba harbour where just under 1000 cubic metres of timber was confiscated, park wardens who took bribes from timber operators have been suspended.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite efforts to halt the logging there are visible signs of rapid deforestation.\u003cbr/\u003eThese trees, so important for carbon sequestration, and their rich biodiversity, are disappearing.\u003cbr/\u003eBeissel is vowing to continue his fight to save them.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
