A new law passed recently means that shopkeepers selling traditional Chinese medicines made from animals like tigers and rhinos now face fines of more than half-a-million U-S dollars and two years in jail.  The move is in response to growing international concern over the future of many species.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are two-thousand Chinese medicine shops like this one in Hong Kong.  The wide range of traditional and homeopathic remedies on sale are extremely popular with locals.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a small number of them are illegally selling items made from tiger bone and rhinoceros horn.  Some Chinese believe these ingredients have miraculous powers in promoting health and virility.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the brutal slaughter of endangered animals has outraged public opinion across the world.  And the Hong Kong police and customs service have stepped up their campaign to crack down on the trade with seizures such as this.  Until recently the highest penalty for illegal traders was three-thousand U-S dollars.
