and could also spread to the busy shipping lanes at the mouth of the Mississippi River, tying up cargo vessels.\u003cbr/\u003eThough a total shutdown of the shipping lanes is unlikely, there could be long delays if vessels are forced to wait to have their oil-coated hulls power-washed.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral river boat pilots said the edge of the oil slick Monday was less than 20 miles (32 kilometres) off the Southwest Pass, where ships headed to New Orleans enter the Mississippi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest satellite image of the slick, taken Sunday night, indicates that it has actually shrunk since last week, but that only means some of the oil has gone underwater.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new image found oil covering about 2-thousand square miles (5,180 square kilometres), rather than the roughly 34-hundred square miles (88-hundred square kilometres) observed last Thursday, Hans Graber of the University of Miami said Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new image also shows that sizable patches have broken away and are moving to the north and east, Graber said.\u003cbr/\u003eSurface oil wasn't expected to touch beaches from Mississippi to the Florida Panhandle before Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eWind and sea currents have helped to keep the oil away from points farther west, said the US Coast Guard.\u003cbr/\u003eCrews have been struggling to stop the more than 200-thousand gallons (757,060 liters) a day spewing from the sea after an offshore drilling platform blew up and sank last month in a disaster that killed 11 workers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe accident is the worst U.S. oil spill since the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska, leaking nearly 11 (m) million gallons (42 (m) million litres) of crude.\u003cbr/\u003eChemical dispersants seemed to be helping to keep oil from floating to the surface, but crews haven't been able to activate a shutout valve underwater. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it could take another week before a 98-ton concrete-and-metal box is placed over one of the leaks to capture the oil.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company BP hired to build the containment boxes says the first one will be completed within 48 hours.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman said Monday that BP hopes to have the 98-ton box in the water by week's end to cover the main leak at the well site.\u003cbr/\u003eA second backup box, also topped with a metal dome, is under construction.\u003cbr/\u003eBP hopes eventually to take pressure off the well by drilling sideways into the oil pocket, but that could take three months.\u003cbr/\u003eBP said Monday it would compensate people for \"legitimate and objectively verifiable\" claims from the explosion and spill.\u003cbr/\u003eBP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward said a meeting he had at the US Interior Department was \"a very constructive dialogue.\" He did not comment further. \u003cbr/\u003eBy all accounts, the disaster is certain to cost BP (b) billions of US dollars \u003cbr/\u003eBut analysts said the company could handle it; BP is the world's third-largest oil company and made more than 6 (b) billion US dollars in the first three months of this year. \u003cbr/\u003eStill, the oil spill has drained 32 (b) billion US dollars from BP's stock market value.\u003cbr/\u003eA watery expanse of 600-thousand square miles (1.6 (m) million square kilometres), the Gulf features marshes and coral reefs, commercial and recreational fisheries and hundreds of wildlife species, including imperiled birds, whales and sea turtles. \u003cbr/\u003eMany are in harm's way, as the oil unleashed when an offshore rig exploded two weeks ago threatens their food supply and the marshlands where they spawn or build nests.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's too early to know how extensively the waters and wetlands could be damaged or how badly any particular species - even those listed as endangered - could suffer, scientists say. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough 30 dead sea turtles had turned up on Mississippi beaches in recent days, necropsies completed on five showed no evidence that oil killed them.\u003cbr/\u003eA dead bird was seen on a Louisiana beach where some oil had washed ashore but it could not be
