Shot of panel from back of hearing room, Rice speaking\u003cbr/\u003eA US congressman on Wednesday called for the return of several dozen Arabic and Farsi translators who were allegedly discharged from the US military because they are homosexual.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring a hearing in Washington DC before the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Gary Ackerman, Democratic Congressman for New York said it seemed \"the Defence Department has a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy when it comes to homosexuals.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, the Associated Press reported that the policy, first implemented during the Clinton administration, led to the dismissals of at least 20 Arabic speakers and six Farsi speakers between 1998 and 2004 after their sexual orientation became known.\u003cbr/\u003eAckerman asked US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, whether her agency had a similar policy on gays. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen Rice said it did not, Ackerman asked whether the former Defence Department linguists could be hired by the US State Department to assist in the war on terror. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For some reason the military seems more afraid of gay people than they are against terrorists, cause they're very brave with the terrorists.
