I just said I don't want to go to Broadway on any terms but Steve and I's terms,\" said Mellencamp when asked the inevitable question about the show's future, which kicks off a regional road show on October 10 in Bloomington, Indiana. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have to be careful when the Broadway question comes up,\" agreed King. \"There's a fine that you have to walk, because I don't want anybody saying, well, I'm dissing this particular thing, like the Broadway experience, like the fox saying those grapes are sour anyway because I can't reach them. Broadway's fine, I don't have a problem with Broadway, but I do think that a lot of the shows and a lot of the musicals are really, really big. And we wanted to do something that was kind of like 'Big River,' it was a little bit smaller, a little bit grittier, a little bit more down home America. So this is a great venue here in Bloomington and some of the other ones that we're going to play on this road show, are terrific places to see a show like this, which is a real hybrid of the musical experience and radio show and all kinds of stuff. It's a lot of fun.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs for the genesis of the collaboration, King explained: \"John told me that he had bought a cabin and that there was a story behind it, where there were two young men and a young girl who were at the cabin, and through a terrible change of events all three ended up dead and they were supposedly haunting the cabin. And he said, 'You know, this could make a really good musical play if we did it the right way. If the two boys who got killed were brothers and they were ghosts and they were still in the cabin with the girl...' And I just kind of went (pounds fist into hand), 'That's my sweet spot!'\"\u003cbr/\u003eThat first conversation was almost 13 years ago. So what took so long to make it a reality?\u003cbr/\u003e\"Steve has a real job, I have a real job,\" said Mellencamp. \"Steve has written 20 books in the last 13 years, I've made half a dozen or so albums, played a thousand shows, so we just kind of did it in between. We would have like, 'Hey Steve, I've got a couple of weeks, you got a couple of weeks?' And we'd work on it, and Steve would work on it, and we'd work on it, and then he'd go away and do what he had to do. So it wasn't like it was a focused, 'OK, we gotta get this done.'
