Close up woman leaving with bicycle\u003cbr/\u003eBicycle sharing programmes are springing up in cities around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the city of San Francisco is considering to introduce a bike-sharing scheme.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's called Bixi - a mix between a \"bicycle\" and \"taxi\".\u003cbr/\u003eWith cities aiming to get greener, and people trying to get fitter, cycling is having a real boom.\u003cbr/\u003eBicycle sharing programmes are encouraging a healthy lifestyle, freeing up roadways and improving air quality. \u003cbr/\u003eAlready in place in countries like France and Spain, San Francisco is now looking into the scheme.\u003cbr/\u003eThe San Francisco Metropolitan Transit Agency and the car-sharing nonprofit City CarShare recently hosted a demo of the Montreal-based company Bixi's bicycle-sharing programme. \u003cbr/\u003eLike car sharing, bicycle sharing offers to use bikes for short periods of time and return them to outdoor kiosks.\u003cbr/\u003eBixi spokesman Greg Sims explains how the system works.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"the general idea is to have a bike available for the last commute. So you can take public transportation and you have another form of public transportation available to you, so you can ride it from point A to point B. So you can take a bike out at one kiosk, and you can return it to any other kiosk throughout the city.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTimothy Papandreou of the San Francisco Metropolitan Transit Authority says the bike share is the final piece in the puzzle to get towards a more sustainable mobility.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"sometimes it's better to walk, bike, take transit, take car sharing, drive your own car, but not all the time. So if we can link them all together, we kind of feel that we will get there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBixi's bikes have travelled more than 447,000 trips, totalling 3 million kilometres (1,8 million miles) since the programme opened in Montreal this spring.\u003cbr/\u003ePast programmes have had trouble with vandalism and theft.\u003cbr/\u003eBixi has responded with reinforced aluminum frames that cover chains and cables and a computerized tracking system. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bikes are also made using specifically designed parts that require specialized tools to disassemble.\u003cbr/\u003eBicycles are the customer's responsibility until they are properly returned to a dock.\u003cbr/\u003eAndy Thornley, programme director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition thinks the scheme is a good idea.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it \"would be really wonderful, we think, for bicycling, and for traffic, and for the environment and so forth. And replacing small trips that folks would make in a car, doing it with a bicycle instead.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBixi's solar-powered stations accept cash, credit or a pre-paid Bixi key to pay for bikes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe proposed pricing ranges from US$ 5 for 24 hours or US$ 120 for a full year, which amounts to about 35 cents a day. \u003cbr/\u003eTo prevent problems, maintenance crews would be on constant rotation and users could alert them to any problems by pressing a button on the rack of a particular bike. \u003cbr/\u003eThese crews would also redistribute the bikes if too many ended up at one station and too few at another. \u003cbr/\u003eIf a customer wishes to return a bike and there are no stations left, he or she can get 15 minutes free to return the bike to a different kiosk.\u003cbr/\u003eFor safety, the bikes have constant front and rear lighting, a low center of gravity, and sturdy tyres. \u003cbr/\u003eHelmets are the customer's responsibility though.\u003cbr/\u003eBut what do San Francisco's residents think of the scheme?\u003cbr/\u003eMagnus Babra finds the bicycles too small for his height, but liked the idea.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"anything to get more people out of their cars and onto bikes would be a good thing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCheryl Brinkman already uses a bike for errands and her commute, and she thinks that a bike-sharing programme would be great for either function.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"they'd be fine to use for trips of up to two or three miles, would be no problem at all.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to convenience, bike-sharing would have benefits for both personal and public health, lowering emissions from cars and encouraging people to exercise.\u003cbr/\u003eRita Redberg, a cardiologist with the University of California San Francisco, says recent research has shown longer lives and lower rates of heart disease for people who bike to work.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"it would be a win-win. Because the people that would be biking would be better off and San Francisco would be better off. The people that are biking are better off because they'd be in better health.
