I think eating organic vegetables is good for my health in the long term, that''s why I buy organic vegetables,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eChina''s organic food market is growing, but it still occupies less than one per cent of the market. \u003cbr/\u003eThe organic industry is a relatively new phenomenon in China, but with the recent scares in food safety, experts say the demand for safe products is growing, particularly in urban areas such as Beijing and Shanghai.\u003cbr/\u003eChina has three types of food: organic food, \"green\" food, which is a quasi-organic certification administered by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture that does permit pesticide and herbicide use, and regular food.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganic campaigners criticise the fact that the organic food industry in China is self-regulated, and this can lead to differences in quality, and in different definitions of what is \"organic\". \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, the Beijing Consumers'' Association warned that 10 per cent of \"green\" food sold in Beijing was fake. \u003cbr/\u003eA survey by the China Daily found that, in a random selection of 268 goods labelled organic, 25 samples were counterfeit.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this organic farm on the outskirts of Beijing, farm workers are growing aubergines the traditional way.\u003cbr/\u003eLiu Mengxian, Assistant Manager of Liuminying Organic Farm, says the demand for organic vegetables is growing. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The sales of organic vegetables in our farm have been increasing in the past few years, and the number of vegetable retailers cooperating with us has also been increasing a lot. I think there is a huge potential in the organic vegetable market as people''s demand on organic vegetables has been increasing ,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2008 scandal involving the sale of contaminated milk underscores the difficulties of policing China''s food producers. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the time, China ordered tens of thousands of milk products laced with an industrial chemical, which made more than 300,000 children sick and at least six died from the contamination.\u003cbr/\u003eSanlu and other dairies promised a $160 (m) million dollar compensation plan, but some families say this is not enough to care for their sick children. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200 families have filed suits, demanding higher compensation and long-term treatment for their babies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the wake of that crisis, China punished dozens of officials, dairy executives and farmers, even executing a dairy farmer and a milk salesman. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the government didn''t destroy seized products itself, and this month ( February) an emergency crackdown revealed that tons of compromised products are still on the market.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang launched a nationwide campaign to ensure food safety, which he considers a top priority.\u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign will focus on food additives, farm production, and the health supplements industry.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Botany Professor Jiang Gaoming says that food safety is a massive issue for China''s agricultural industry. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has developed several organic farms across China and is working with local farmers to encourage them to use traditional methods to grow crops, rather than relying on chemicals or genetically modified farming methods.  \u003cbr/\u003eJiang says the organic industry is still in its infancy, and safety regulations for the industry are a key priority. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We estimate that only two in 10,000 of food products produced in China is real organic food, because the the organic food industry in China has just started.
