Close of toddler eating in baby seat at table\u003cbr/\u003eTen percent of pregnant women in Thailand are opting to have caesarean sections, according to Bangkok's Samitivej Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eMany Thai women believe in astrology and local traditions that focus on the importance of choosing the exact date and time of birth to help children have strong and healthy lives. \u003cbr/\u003eBut there is a growing number of mainly Western women choosing to have natural births. \u003cbr/\u003eMany are practicing prenatal pilates to help prepare for the challenges of childbirth.\u003cbr/\u003eBaby Poramitr is just four days old, and naturally, his mother and father are proud as punch.\u003cbr/\u003eHis mother, Tithiporn Sangmanee, is a 34 year old Marketing officer who opted to have a C-section. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family is Thai-Chinese and believes in astrology and local traditions that stress the importance of choosing the exact moment that babies are born.\u003cbr/\u003eThe family believe this will help their son have a long, healthy and prosperous life. \u003cbr/\u003eTithiporn Sangmanee is among 20 per cent of women at Bangkok's Samitivej Hospital and 10 percent of women across Thailand who are choosing to have caesarean sections.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason I chose this surgical method of delivery instead of natural birth is because I believe strongly in astrology,\" says Tithiporn. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe it will bring a lot of good luck to my children. We know when we can leave and go back to work.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough C-sections are popular among some women, many others - particularly Western women in Thailand - are choosing to have natural deliveries. \u003cbr/\u003eWomen at the Pilates Studio in downtown Bangkok are practicing prenatal pilates. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is designed to help them strengthen their bodies, become more flexible, and develop the mental strength and balance needed for childbirth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe studio says natural births help mothers connect more with their babies and that it is the healthiest option if possible.\u003cbr/\u003eIn prenatal pilates classes, expecting mothers strengthen their deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles which practionners says are important for giving birth. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the expecting mothers is Ingrid Truelove.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the exercises are not only good for building strength but help improve her mental and physical health generally.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I just have a lot more energy to get through my day. Some things that come with pregnancy, certain pains and aches, and I find I can get through them a lot more through my yoga, through breathing, through stretching.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThey practice isometric contractions of the abdominal wall to gently hug the baby inside. \u003cbr/\u003eThe studio's owner, Or-Yah Avni, says the more women are prepared for the physical pain of labour, the more they will be able to get through it with ease. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We believe that every woman has this wisdom and this knowledge inside. It's something that is kind of imprinted in the genes, and just need to re-find it and let it come up to the surface.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAvni says pilates also helps pregnant women rebalance their hormones during and after delivery.\u003cbr/\u003eIn each pose, students are encouraged to breathe deeply. \u003cbr/\u003eThis helps provide a rich supply of oxygen for the expecting mother and child.\u003cbr/\u003eDeep relaxation sessions help women generate physical and mental ease that are vital for childbirth. \u003cbr/\u003eMany prenatal pilates postures are tailored especially for expecting women. \u003cbr/\u003eSome are inspired by feminine yoga postures like Thai goddess and warrior positions that help pregnant women prepare for delivery with courage, self-confidence, grace and dignity, the studio says. \u003cbr/\u003eMia ï¿½hrn is a dedicated prenatal pilates instructor who has practiced pilates and yoga for 12 years. \u003cbr/\u003eShe started training to become a prenatal pilates instructor while pregnant with her two year-old son. \u003cbr/\u003eShe is expecting her second child in six months. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the women at the Pilates Studio practice the exercise three to five times a week. It takes dedication and it's hard work, but there are many benefits. \u003cbr/\u003eSome women may have concerns about doing physical exercise while pregnant, but the Pilates Studio insists that working out and pregnancy go hand in hand if doctors give the green light. \u003cbr/\u003eThe studio says it is important for expecting mothers to get regular exercise, eat healthy food, and prepare physically and mentally for delivery and the post-natal period. \u003cbr/\u003eMany Thai women have practiced similar forms of exercise while pregnant for generations, according to Samitivej Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors at the hospital recommend prenatal pilates to help women strengthen their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say the exercises also help women rebalance their homes and strengthen their shoulder girdles for carrying babies after delivery.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty percent of women at Bangkok's Samitivej Hospital choose to have C-sections. \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors respect their wishes but insist natural births are the ideal scenario for mothers and babies. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If you are a mother who have been pregnant before, you will know already there are many discomforts that come from the stretching and enlarging of the ovaries, and aching of the muscles and body,\" says Dr. Yaowaluk Rapeepattana, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Samitivej Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There are often cramps, or even digestion problems, difficulty going to the toilet, constipation, and other issues, for starters.
