As the game heats up against Keio University, Waseda University fans get up on their feet to sing in unison along to the sound of their cheer...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eCheering crowds fill the stadium as rival Japanese universities face off at a soccer match.   \u003cbr/\u003eAs the game heats up against Keio University, Waseda University fans get up on their feet to sing in unison along to the sound of their cheer squad's drums.  \u003cbr/\u003eA student in the audience says the cheer squad helps her join in with the crowd, and the game becomes more enjoyable.\u003cbr/\u003eDressed in stiff, black student uniforms that date back to late 19th century,  the cheer squad remains traditional and unique.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cheer squad started out with a mission among post war Japanese university students to rekindle students' spirits that were badly battered by the wars.  \u003cbr/\u003eBrass bands and cheerleaders were introduced in 1970s and became more mainstream, but the squad teams have continued to take up a central role in leading the cheer at universities throughout Japan.   \u003cbr/\u003eWaseda University's squad commemorates its 70th anniversary next year.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhile changes were made repeatedly over the years, many of the squad teams' typical traditions have been handed down over the decades along with their unique, arm-swinging choreography.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers wear the same uniform 365 days a year for all four years, and everyone is subject to rules and traditions that bind how they behave until the day of graduation sets them free.  \u003cbr/\u003eStrict hierarchy is one of the most visible forms of tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eFinding seniors on campus, junior members must get up on their feet and greet them out loud.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey may speak to seniors one year above them, but from two years on, speaking directly is strictly prohibited.  \u003cbr/\u003eCaptain of the Waseda cheer squad, Ryotaro Yamamoto, says when he came to join the squad, he was told to think of the eldest members, or fourth-years, as gods.   \u003cbr/\u003eJuniors at the bottom of the four-year ladder have a long way to go and their daily training is rigorous.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhether hot, thirsty, tired or drenched in sweat, the practice goes on loudly until there is an order to halt.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut the tough daily training pays off, says the captain, and that cheering for their alma mater and uniting with the fans brings members indescribable joy.\u003cbr/\u003eAs to what draws contemporary Japanese males to this sport, Yasuhiro Sakaue, Professor of Sport Sociology at Hitotsubashi University, thinks that they are drawn to the strictness of the cheer squad, probably due to the satisfaction they can derive from overcoming the exceptionally tough rites of passage.    \u003cbr/\u003eHierarchy is absolute among many of Japan's cheer squads, and cheering in a high-collared, thick student uniform in a hot, damp weather is almost as severe as a punishment.  \u003cbr/\u003eTeams such as Waseda, that still survive today, and are a favourite with the fans, have managed to update themselves while remaining true to the traditional cheering style.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a finale for the night's event, Captain Yamamoto shows off his routine.\u003cbr/\u003eCrowds enjoying the night may know little about how much it takes to be on the cheer squad or their struggle to remain relevant today.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut they cheer on as their devoted leader performs in his hard-earned style to bring victory to their school.\u003cbr/\u003ewacky\u003cbr/\u003eTokyo, Japan - June 2009\u003cbr/\u003e1.
