Viva Brazil and Viva Spain.\"\u003cbr/\u003e13- Wide of end of concert\u003cbr/\u003eThe worldwide famous Flamenco dancer Antonio Marquez and his company are on tour in Brazil, performing on some of the main Brazilian stages, for 20 days.  But this Sunday, to celebrate the last week of the Brazilian tour, the Antonio Marquez Company did an open-air concert in one of the most violent places in Brazil: the city of Nova Iguacu, in Rio de Janeiro State.  The city is located in an area called \"Baixada Fluminense\", which made international headlines at the beginning of the 90´s due to the drug war and violent crime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local population started to arrive early at the concert location.  The show cost US$ 100 thousand to the local Mayor's Office, but was free for the audience.  It was the first time ever that a famous international name stepped into the infamous town.  Most people in Nova Iguacu have never seen a Flamenco dance, and it was an event not to be missed.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most excited members of the audience was Enizia Cunha da Silva, a 26 year-old single mother with two sons.  She lives with two other families.  In total, 16 people live in her house, where the average income is of 150 Reais per month ( around US$ 75).  For Enizia, who knew what the samba is, but had never heard of Flamenco dance, it was a totally new experience.\u003cbr/\u003eMoments before the concert started, Antonio Marquez left his dressing room to meet the press.  For the 37-year-old dancer, it was important to take his concert beyond the main Brazilian stages, in a area famous for its violence.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one and a half hours, the Antonio Marquez Dance Company showed the local population why they are one of the best Flamenco dance groups in the world.  With 12 ballerinas and 5 musicians, the group performed the same concert that they brought to the posh stages in the main Brazilian cities, like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Curitiba: a choreography inspired by Bizet's Carmen, called \"El Matador - Despues de Carmen\", a mix of Flamenco Dance and classical ballet. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the second part, called \"Movimiento Flamenco\", Antonio Marquez had the opportunity to show all his technique, travelling through the various Flamenco styles, where music, rhythm and dance get together in harmony.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Antonio Marquez Company was created in 1995, in Sevilha - where the dancer was born - with the aim of bring Flamenco back to its roots.  In 1996, the group did their first Spanish tour.  In 1997, Antonio Marquez won the Nureyev Prize, the higest dance prize in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1998, the group visited Italy, Portugal and Japan, in their first international tour.  In 1999, the company launched \"Despues de Carmen\" in the Theatre of Madrid.  The year 2000 was celebrated with tours in Italy, Portugal, Japan, Austria and France.  In France, Antonio Marquez did a choreography for the new version of \"Don Quixote\" for the Paris Opera.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local audience was amazed with the Flamenco concert.  One university teacher from Chile was also delighted with the integration between the Latin American cultures that the concert brings to the audience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Antonio Marquez Dance Company finishes the 20-day tour in Brazil this Wednesday, April, 11th, with a concert in the city of Nova Friburgo, in Rio de Janeiro State.
