is one of the most important and joyous celebrations in Mexico's culture. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead predates Spanish colonial rule and Catholicism in the Americas, although it was essentially merged with the Catholic religious practices of All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2).\u003cbr/\u003eAltogether, these practices and rituals pay respects to the souls or spirits of those who have passed on.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead is a celebration in which the family welcomes back to the household departed relatives and loved ones, sharing the joys of life with them as their memories live on.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a time of feasting and merriment, not of mourning and loss.\u003cbr/\u003eEuropean religious traditions initially threatened to stamp out the ritual because the European view of death was more ominous and fearful, and the indigenous people's ritual was seen as sacriligious. \u003cbr/\u003eBut despite the many changes that have rocked the country, the customs and beliefs that make up The Day of the Dead have survived intact. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, in Mexico's City's Dolores Cemetery, families gathered to clean and tidy the graves of loved
