to do more to put an end to the testing of animals in the name of science and medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodall, a long time campaigner for animal rights, presented a 150-thousand name petition to EU lawmakers at the European Parliament calling on them and the EU's executive office to find replacement testing methods that do not involve animals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We need to recognise at the outset, that what we do to animals from their perspective certainly, and probably from ours is morally wrong and unacceptable,\" Goodall said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe best-known observer of chimpanzee behaviour joined with animal rights groups to put pressure on EU governments to revise over 20 year-old EU rules from 1986 to expand a ban on the use of animals and to promote alternative technologies to advance medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodall called on the 27-nation bloc to promote research aid to develop new testing techniques.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Where is the big encouragement, where is the political will, where is the funding for this kind of research,\" asked Goodall.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodall revolutionised research on primates during the 1960s when she studied them at close range in Tanzania.\u003cbr/\u003eShe documented tool use, emotions and war in the chimpanzee groups she observed, and her books and TV specials about her work at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve sparked the world's curiosity about apes.\u003cbr/\u003eEU governments and industry are moving to meet a 2009 EU law deadline after which most cosmetic products that were tested on animals will be banned within the 27-nation bloc.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, those rules do not impose a total ban on animal testing for medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Commission and the cosmetics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries did agree jointly in 2006, however, to voluntarily reduce and eventually replace the need for animal testing for new medicines and other consumer products within the EU.\u003cbr/\u003eScientist Gill Langley, from the British-based Dr. Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, an advocacy group against animal testing in medical research, said about 12 (m) million animals are used each year across the EU for experiments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are calling for a new and targeted strategy on animal experiments for the EU and we see that strategy having three priorities: to
