Wide of engineering company offices\u003cbr/\u003eHigh rates of unemployment in the European Union are driving young European professionals to seek work in rapidly expanding countries like Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while perks include enjoying the sun and surf on Rio's Ipanema Beach, jobs still need to be found.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city of Rio de Janeiro is at the centre of the Brazilian prosperity boom.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's boom is fuelled by recent discoveries of oil reserves, a growing economy and upcoming mega sporting events like the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. \u003cbr/\u003eBrazil has experienced its lowest historical unemployment rate in December 2012 at 5.5 percent.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn the same month, the European Union experienced a 10 percent unemployment rate, reaching 17 percent in Portugal and 26 percent in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eSpain's National Statistics Institute revealed on Thursday that the country's unemployment rate shot up to a record 27.2 percent in the first quarter of 2013.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those under 25 years of age, unemployment reached 38 percent in Portugal and 55 percent in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eThese numbers partially explain the new migration of young professionals to Brazil.  \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of high rents attached to the upcoming sports events, many newcomers to Rio find it more affordable to rent space in the quieter favelas (shanty towns). \u003cbr/\u003eLaw graduate Ana Olivia Cardoso and her roommate Natalia are from Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are renting a small house in the Babilonia favela.\u003cbr/\u003eAna Olivia moved from Madrid to Rio two years ago and now works in community related issues. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says there are many people from Spain living in Rio.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Brazil right now is an open door, it represents hope to make a living at least for Spaniards and it requires learning a new language and a different culture. It's better than staying in your country, depressed, without work, living with your parents.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMany young professionals have arrived in Brazil looking for work.\u003cbr/\u003eSome are legally entitled to work in the country while others are not.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazilian Labour Ministry statistics show a rise in work permits issued to foreigners of seventy percent between 2009 and 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the largest contingents of new professional immigrants come from Portugal. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of them have adopted the local customs of Rio de Janeiro residents, who do most of their socialising at the beach. \u003cbr/\u003eMarked by two red flags of Portuguese football team, Benfica, a drink and food stand serves as reference point for these young professionals to meet. \u003cbr/\u003eMany here are newly arrived and this is a good place for making new connections. \u003cbr/\u003ePortuguese communications graduate Rui Mendonca says he has only just arrived.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I got here on the fifteenth (of March).
