The...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEgypt's largest camel market is gaining nationwide attention as the current foot and mouth outbreak spreads. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Birqash Camel Market, just outside Giza, camel traders frm across the country come laden with their camel cargoes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe demand for camel meat has grown, as consumption of beef and cattle has dropped across the country in the wake of the foot and mouth scares. \u003cbr/\u003eCamel meat has traditionally been marketed as a low-fat, low-cholesterol alternative to beef. Now, people are turning to camel meat for safety reasons. \u003cbr/\u003eCamel oil is used in soap and cosmetics, and even camel urine, apparently, has its fans; some manufacturers use it in hair and skin products. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Birqash camel market is busiest on a Friday and Sunday. The market opens early each morning before it gets too hot for the traders to do their business. \u003cbr/\u003eCamel trader, Fawzy Dorein says the traders transport the camels to the butchers. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says, \"This market works on Fridays and Sundays. These are the main days. On Mondays , Tuesdays and Thursdays , there is a little amount of business going here. The butchers come here to buy camels and we transport them to their shops.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBirqash Camel Market is about 85-kilometres (52.8 miles) from Cairo. \u003cbr/\u003eCamel traders come from over over the country to trade importing their camels from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Uganda. \u003cbr/\u003eCamels are transferred by truck from the Sudan-Egypt border, where an agent then sells the camels on to a trader.\u003cbr/\u003eThe traders bargain with the agent to get the best price for the camels. \u003cbr/\u003eThe agents are adapt at dealing with the camel's temperament. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The camels behaviour varies from one to another. You can find a wild dangerous ones and calm ones. Some of them would kick you like a bull and others could bite you, but mainly the Sudanese camels I have are good and tame and I know how to deal with them,\" says Moussa Alaswad, a Sudanese camel agent.\u003cbr/\u003eAnimal abuse is not uncommon at the market. Some traders tie-up the left front limb of each camel to stop them escaping. \u003cbr/\u003eOther traders also beat the animals with sticks.\u003cbr/\u003eEach camel is marked and named to be identified. \u003cbr/\u003eSome tourists come to the market to experience the sights and sounds. But for some visitors, they say the experience is too cruel. \u003cbr/\u003eItalian tourist, Claudia Assori said the camels should have better rights. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Here I saw camels that have been beaten. Even if they were just sitting in the car.  So I don't understand. How can they teach the camel how to behave? They beat if they are quiet. They beat if they are running. It seems that they are enjoying the way they are beating them. So I really don't understand. Can you see around you? The situation is.... camels have rights and they are so important for Egyptians, so they must have more rights because of this,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eHer friend Marion agrees, and said the traders should be in the business of making money, and not unnecessary cruelty. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean I totally understand that this is business and that people are here to earn their life which is natural. But I mean there are other ways to do that. And actually the camels are becoming very aggressive sometimes and they are running everywhere. It is dangerous to walk here because they are becoming aggressive because they don't know what's going on. They just have three legs. They can't really move. I just feel its cruel and useless,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe camel market is the place to buy and sell camels, and their meat. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd for the sick and dead camels, many are just abandoned. \u003cbr/\u003eDowntown in central Cairo, some butchers are specialising in camel-only meat ventures. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd there has been a rise in business following the outbreak of foot and mouth in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eOne butcher claims the price of meat has increased to $9 US dollars per kilo. \u003cbr/\u003eMona Ali says she is worried about the safety of cattle meat. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Now we totally fear cow and cattle meat. So we switched to camel meat. Our cooking and our minced meat and everything is from pure camel meat. We have changed to camel meat after the media's continuous warnings to stop eating meat.
