It's means that we can see if the patient has disease, what extent of that disease is and you can properly stratify (assign) the patient to a particular type of treatment, be it surgery, or chemotherapy of a particular type so this is all very exciting."
4. Most of them can't be demonstrated before at least six to eight weeks and that's the reason why this technology is very, very useful and important at the moment."
17. Close up of patient Wendy Hogg's head lying down on scanner
18. Mid shot of patient coming out end of scanner
If a cancer patient is to survive and recover, it is vital to diagnose and treat the disease at the earliest possible opportunity.
Now huge steps in the sophistication of imaging equipment and scanners is making this possible.
Doctors in the United Kingdom are using Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners to detect a tumour and to test whether new drugs are effective.
Six months ago 59 year old Wendy Hogg, a London teacher discovered a lump in her breast.
Hospital tests confirmed the lump, three centimetres in diameter, was malignant.
Like millions of other women around the world who have developed breast cancer Wendy faced the fact that she had to have chemotherapy.
This treatment usually has severe, debilitating side effects on different parts of the body.
The hair, the skin and the lining of the mouth and digestive systems, are constantly renewing themselves by allowing cells of all these body tissues to divide to produce a steady supply of new cells.
But chemotherapy attacks the dividing cells, whether they are healthy or cancerous, so patients undergoing the treatment like Wendy Hogg suffer hair loss, nausea and subsequent loss of appetite.
Some people also develop painful mouth ulcers.
In most cases patients feel exhausted and unable to carry on their lives as normal.
Here at Imperial College's research site at Hammersmith Hospital doctors are looking for new methods to treat patients like Wendy Hogg with the help of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner.
It not only allows them to see the tumour, but allows them to compare how effectively a drug is working within a couple of weeks.
That can mean patients are subjected to less chemotherapy, or other toxic drugs.
The charity Cancer Research UK is so enthusiastic about future possibilities with imaging technology that it helping to fund a multi million dollar investment in the research in partnership with Imperial College.
Professor Eric Aboagye, the lead scientist at the unit says the new technology is exciting because it means that doctors are now be able to see what's happening in a patient's tumour and be able to understand how the drugs work inside that tumour.
Aboagye says being able to visualise means doctors can stop an ineffective drug straight away in favour of another which has a better chance of reducing the cancer.
In order for the tumour to show up on a scan a safe dose of a mildly radioactive drug is injected into the body, usually through a vein in the arm.
It works by emitting nuclear material which gets trapped in the tumour and which in turn is revealed by a ray of detectors inside the scanner.
After just two weeks doctors here were able to identify that chemotherapy had shrunk Wendy Hogg's tumour by twenty per cent, enough for them to remove the rest of the tumour by surgery.
Normally this diagnosis would have taken three months, meaning Hogg's body would have had to suffer the side effects of the chemotherapy for much longer.
Hogg says when she found out about her cancer she didn't know how she was going to cope.
She says people aren't always as strong as they imagine they will be and she was relieved the doctors dealing with her knew what they were doing and offered her the best possible chance of to getting through.
Imperial's clinical research fellow Kaiyumars Contractor says their research confirms that if patients respond early to treatment it leads to an improvement in their chances of survival and their response to any future therapy.
At later stages of development the disease becomes far more difficult to treat because it becomes more resistant to drugs.
Cancer Research UK is also hoping the programme will enable progress in the development of new cytostatic drugs which are hoped will have fewer side effects than chemotherapy.
These drugs work by stopping the cancer cells from multiplying.
It's hoped the PET scan will also prove to be cost effective because it cuts down the use of drugs that aren't working on a patient.
Cancer drugs affect people differently and what works on one person might not work as well on another.
Drug treatments can cost up to thirty thousand dollars per patient each year and so doctors are hoping the amount of money saved could be considerable.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
