They are very very heavy like medieval torture devices and these would be strapped to the bear its whole life while still inside a cage.\"\u003cbr/\u003e35. Various of bear limping, one leg severed\u003cbr/\u003eAid workers rescued 13 sick and injured bears in China's Sichuan province which were being reared in state approved farms for the harvest of their bile.\u003cbr/\u003eBear bile is known in China and parts of Asia for its medicinal properties and is often used in traditional Chinese medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eBear farming is legal in China and an estimated seven thousand bears are kept in 480 bile harvesting farms.\u003cbr/\u003eNicknamed moon bears for their crescent shaped marking on their chests, the bears were sent to a rescue centre in the suburbs of Chengdu run by Hong Kong-based, Animals Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2000, the organisation signed an agreement with Chinese authorities to rescue 500 farmed bears. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 13 bears that arrived on Friday came with a host of medical problems ranging from blindness, liver tumours, and open wounds that were dripping with bile.\u003cbr/\u003eBile is drained from bears using a host of brutal methods ranging from catheters and rubber pipes but the government has since banned them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe method most bear farms use now is the free drip method where a permanent hole is carved into the bear's abdomen to extract the bile.\u003cbr/\u003eHayley Walters, a 30-year-old veterinary nurse from England who has been with the organisation for two years has seen bears come in with numerous problems ranging from hernias, huge abscesses and mental disorders from being confined in cages for so long.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For something as magnificent as a moon bear to be crushed and contained within horrific cages like these, absolute sadness and then relief that they have come to us and they are safe at last when they come home,\" she said clearly emotional.\u003cbr/\u003eOne bear was found to be in such critical condition that doctors had to perform a check-up on it immediately.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bear had a severely swollen abdomen, a wound that was dripping bile and suspected liver tumours.\u003cbr/\u003eIt eventually was euthanised.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I suspect that he's probably got liver tumours or liver failure at least. He's got a lot of fluid building underneath his skin which is why it's so swollen,\" said Heather Bacon a Veterinary Surgeon with the association.\u003cbr/\u003eGiven the condition of the bears when they arrive at the sanctuary, such deaths are common.\u003cbr/\u003eAnimals Asia opened its moon bear sanctuary in 2002 in a bamboo forest in the south-western province of Sichuan and of the 247 bears it rescued over the past five years, 60 have died from complications.\u003cbr/\u003eFranzi, a female bear that arrived at the sanctuary five years ago is one of the lucky survivors.\u003cbr/\u003eIts previous owner cut off its claws and canine teeth and locked it in a tiny cage which barely fits a 11-year old child. \u003cbr/\u003eFranzi eventually developed a syndrome called stress dwarfism and is barely half the size of regular bears.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Bear farming is a cruel and unnecessary industry. Foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe association is also funding research programmes to determine how drinking contaminated bile from cancer stricken bears could be damaging to human health.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd an increasing body of research is showing that bear bile can be easily and cheaply replaced by herbal or synthetic materials which can be used to treat eye and liver ailments in humans, according to Animals Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists say bear farming began in North Korea in the 1980's and spread to China, Vietnam and South Korea.\u003cbr/\u003eActivists claim that China's output of bear bile is up to twice its consumption, suggesting that bear farms are supplying a thriving foreign trade, though the government says it knows of no exports.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter enduring their initial ordeal, the rescued bears can finally rest easy in their new sanctuary.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many will forever endure the health implications of their
