Various of craftsman beginning to make cast for a new boat\u003cbr/\u003eThe first major fishing vessel rebuilt following last year's devastating tsunami has been built and launched at Ofunato Docks.\u003cbr/\u003eTo those who built the craft, this launch is a poignant reminder of the disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eFishing boats damaged and destroyed by the tsunami are still being repaired on the north side of Ofunato Bay.\u003cbr/\u003eA large part of the northeastern fishing fleet was damaged beyond repair and will have to be replaced.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has made the region's boat builders crucial to the revival of the local fishing industry.\u003cbr/\u003eOfunato is a city famous for boat building.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis traditional industry was among the casualties of the devastating floods that followed the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami.\u003cbr/\u003eThe launch of a new boat is always a special occasion.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is often the culmination of thousands of hours of skilled labour and a collaboration that encompasses both cutting edge technology and traditional craft.\u003cbr/\u003eSuga Chemical Sangyo boat building is a company which specialises in the production of medium-sized fishing vessels.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir workshops, machinery, casts and materials were either severely damaged or completely destroyed by the tsunami.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company has since reopened and began production again in May, 2011.\u003cbr/\u003e17 January, 2012 saw the completion of the first major boat building project to be undertaken since the disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eOmori Shu is the draughtsman responsible for making the drawings used to build the new boat.\u003cbr/\u003eAs he explains, construction of the cast began during the summer of 2011.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because the vessel is made from RFP (reinforced fibreglass plastic) we had to build a cast.  The cast was built during July and August (2011).\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe complex wooden structure was finished in early September, 2011 after which building began in earnest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe RFP hull was lifted out of the cast in late November, and the engine, hydraulics and navigational systems were fitted in December, 2011 and early January, 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eShu says there have been a number of blessings on the vessel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In September (2011) the fishermen who will sail the vessel came to the boat yard and the first ceremony was performed to mark the beginning of construction.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe boat is called the Dai Nana Mombetsu Maru.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been built for Hokkaido's scallop fishery.\u003cbr/\u003eOmori Shu explains that despite being outside of the disaster area the boat building company continued with the project because they had received the order prior to the tsunami.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The client for this boat is from Hokkaido so it is not going to be used in the north east and we have to think about our future relationship with clients outside the disaster area.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the launch, a Shinto priest performs a ceremony in which he invokes sea deities to protect the crew and bless the vessel with bountiful harvests.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new owners then toast completion with a cup of sake (Japanese alcohol) and throw rice cakes from the boat to the craftsmen who had made it.\u003cbr/\u003eShu, involved with all stages of the project, describes how he felt before the launch.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The boat has been built but until its in the water we won't know for sure that everything is ok. Its important to all of us who work here.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile building this boat the company has worked on numerous repairs and other smaller projects.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have also had to rebuild the company itself.\u003cbr/\u003eGiven the fact that many employees lost their homes and some people their loved ones during the disaster, the achievements are all the more remarkable.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company is already in the process of making similar boats and now has a backlog of orders that will take another three years to
