They are a part of the political fight.\"26. ws television control room27. cu Dorienko on TV screen28. ms Dorienko talking to camera   \u003cbr/\u003eRussian/Eng/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eWhether it's video pictures of gory operations or sychophantic interviews with favoured politicians, the gloves are most definitely off in the television fight to win the hearts and minds of  Russia's voters.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the battlefield is increasingly becoming the realm of caustic commentators who preach their politics to unsuspecting viewers on their Sunday night programmes. \u003cbr/\u003eWith just three weeks to go to Russia's parliamentary elections, the country's three main T-V channels are making no bones about who their political enemies are.          \u003cbr/\u003eMove over Jerry Springer, this is Sergei Dorienko and he is leading the way in the television media wars that have hit Russia's airwaves. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fight is on for the parliamentary spoils in December and  the Kremlin next summer.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe main contenders have invested in television channels and are using the airwaves as a battleground to attack their opponents.  \u003cbr/\u003eDorienko is the face of O-R-T,  Russia's state broadcaster and its most potent television channel.  With his hard-hitting, mud-slinging style, Dorenko is taking on Russia's major political figures, especially those unfavorable to his boss -  ORT shareholder, millionaire and friend of the Yeltsin \"family\" Boris Berezovsky.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is matter-of-fact about his craft, and is cynical about the nature of news coverage in Russia.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is television, and then there is quasi-television.  I would not say that we have television but that we have some form of quasi-press, quasi-journalism and quasi-television.  In the same sense, we have quasi-democracy,  a quasi-society and a quasi-government.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Sergei Dorienko, TV anchor, \"The Dorienko Show\"\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, Dorienko laid into possible presidential contender Yevgeny Primakov, accusing him of two failed assassination attempts on Georgian President Eduard Shevardnaze.  In the same edition, he questioned whether Primakov was literally fit to govern, showing these gruesome pictures of a hip replacement surgery - much like the surgery, he claimed, Primakov underwent during the first part of this year in Switzerland.    \u003cbr/\u003eIt is with these kind of tactics which he hopes to turn voters against the newly-formed Fatherland-All-Russia party, headed by Yevgeny Primakov and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, which promises to win big in next month's Duma elections.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Yevgeny Primakov is not worried. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"They do not go against anyone else, only against us.  It means that they fear us. Those who do not follow our course do not want us to turn out in big numbers in the upcoming Duma elections.  They will do anything to get in our way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Yevgeny Primakov, Co-Leader Fatherland-All- Russia Party\u003cbr/\u003ePrimakov has found a voice, though, in Yevgeny Kiselyov.   Kiselyov's  program \"Itogi\"  on independent channel NTV runs back to back with \"The Dorienko Show\" on Sunday evenings.  NTV is owned by banking mogul Vladimir Gusinsky and has financial ties to the city of Moscow.  \u003cbr/\u003eGusinsky maintains favorable ties with Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and those close to him.  Gusinsky and Berezovsky hate one another and make no secret of it.    \u003cbr/\u003eYuri Luzhkov has his own mouthpiece, too.  In September, Luzhkov expanded the format of his city TV channel to include its own Sunday evening news magazine.  Alexander Khinshtein delivers his own brand of muckraking, this time attacking Dorienko's sponsors in the Kremlin. \u003cbr/\u003eNot long ago, the Communist Party was the one source of information.  In the media wars that are being raged, the average viewer can no longer rely on one version of the truth.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In this case, the directions come from, as you say, the so-called oligarchs.  The difference is also that they are pursuing their own personal interests and there is a kind of plurality, pluralism.
