Various of cruise ship carrying labourers back into port of New Orleans\u003cbr/\u003eThe mammoth tasks of restoring New Orleans' levees and removing heaps of debris, interrupted when Hurricane Rita rammed the Gulf Coast, resumed as the mayor pushed his plan to reopen parts of the city this week.\u003cbr/\u003eChinook helicopters dropping 3175 kilogramme (7,000-pound) sandbags sought to plug gaps in the levee system, breached by Hurricane Katrina. \u003cbr/\u003eEven those areas newly flooded this weekend by Rita could be pumped dry again within a week after levee damage is repaired - far sooner than initially predicted, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers.\u003cbr/\u003eA Corps spokesman said federal officials had been coordinating with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin's effort to begin allowing evacuated residents to return and were supportive of his plan.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday, Nagin renewed his plans to allow some residents to return to drier parts of the city where utilities have already been restored. Dry districts will eventually support a population of between 250,000 and 300,000, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the city was spared significant new damage when Rita struck near the Texas-Louisiana border, but the hurricane's rain and storm surge partially breached levees along the Industrial Canal, causing renewed flooding in the hard-hit Ninth Ward. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, as the flood waters finally retreated, residents continued to return to survey their homes and recover possessions.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Garden district, the flood had reduced the contents of Gary LeMoyne's home to junk.\u003cbr/\u003eBut LeMoyne was philosophical: all his family was safe and he expressed the hope that beleaguered New Orleans could thrive again, once its levees were rebuilt.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother sign that the city would emerge from the Hurricane Katrina disaster came in the shape of  a cruise liner which docked at News Orleans.
