To not only detect but to be able to handle it, to provide the best service to the  citizen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Gary Marrs, Oklahoma City Fire Chief\u003cbr/\u003eThe hearing came a year after a Senate report called the threat of domestic terrorism  high, and U-S cities' ability to handle it low.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Friday's hearing, experts brought out examples of some of the technology and  equipment that they believe local rescue teams should have on hand at all times.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch as this blast-protector suit which protects the wearer from chemical and biological  attacks.    \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing in New York City, terrorists unsuccessfully  tried to use the toxic gas sodium cyanide. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother toxic gas was used in a March 1995 subway attack in Tokyo. \u003cbr/\u003eBut at Oklahoma which is still the worst case of terrorism on U-S soil, Marrs said the  death toll could have been hundreds more if biological or chemical agents had been  used.\u003cbr/\u003eA threat, which he warned, is not outside the realm of possibility.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year, President Clinton signed an anti-terrorism law which was widely supported in  Congress to provide money to local law enforcement agencies.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe act also required the U-S government to train local authorities in terrorism response  tactics. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever that bill did not extend the funds to fire and emergency response units, often  the first on the scene.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chairman of the subcommittee, Republican Congressman Curt Weldon of  Pennsylvania, says that needs to change.\u003cbr/\u003eHe wants to put the Pentagon's most up-to-date equipment, from bomb and chemical  detection devices to biological weapons and space age suits, into the hands of the  initial response rescuers. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Experts say that one teaspoon of the agent used in the Sarin gas attack in Japan, one  teaspoon would kill five thousand people.
