So it has benefited the community a lot. At the same time, it has reduced the water borne diseases and also these other infectious diseases that used to be around here.\" \u003cbr/\u003e30. Various shots of children playing nearby the bio-latrine facility where the school is located.\u003cbr/\u003eA \"flying toilet\" may sound like new technology, but to the people of a slum in Kibera it's the phrase given to the manner in which human waste is disposed of here - an unsavoury consequence of local poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a project that converts human waste into energy is providing relief for the local community.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an area where survival is the foremost priority, the human waste from the flying toilets of Kibera slum plagues the water supply, the streets and anywhere else the effluence might end up.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Flying toilet\" is the term given to the practice of disposing of human waste in plastic bags. It is prevalent in Kibera, which leads to unimaginable smells and sights that inevitably result in health problems. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sprawling mass of tin roofed shacks squashed closely together leave no room for landlords to provide toilet facilities for tenants, forcing them to pay for these essential services in make shift shacks that offer lavatory services at a hefty price.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now a simple project has been launched that converts human waste into energy which in turn helps cushion slum dwellers from rising food and fuel prices. \u003cbr/\u003eOne group of residents has helped construct a series of bio toilets which recycles human waste into gas for cooking and light. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Oberi is a member of the Shirika Usafi Bio Latrine group. He explains how the community worked together to build the specially converted toilets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project, adapted from a design produced in Tanzania, is simple. Residents pay three cents to use one of eight drop toilets encircling a buried tank. The waste produces methane gas, which heats water for hot showers, cooks food, or lights lamps. Solid waste is treated, to be sold as fertiliser. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trickle of coins pays cleaners, a caretaker and funds other bio-gas projects. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first centre in Kibera was built four years ago, proving so successful that there are now 34 other bio-gas projects in various stages of completion around Kenya. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bio-gas project has been adopted in several African and Asian states including China, Vietnam, South Africa, Zambia, whereas Ghanaians are in the steps of starting their own biogas projects.\u003cbr/\u003eBio latrines around the Kibera slums are easing pressure on pockets as well as bladders by providing free cooking gas to community projects and schools for orphans. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 600 people use the Laini Saba Bio-Latrine facility daily, generating enough gas to cook for 68 orphans next door and provide hot water for the community. If another 200 people a day come to spend a penny or three, there will be enough gas to generate lighting for the surrounding residents.\u003cbr/\u003eGrubby, bright eyed toddlers recite the alphabet at the orphanage. Since the bio-gas project began piping gas to the school next door three years ago, cooking the pupils meals are free from gas expenses and the money collected has been used to buy cooking oil and salt to season the bland porridge. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunity outreach worker Stephen Otondo says that the Bio-Latrine facility is making the lives of the local community easier and reducing infectious diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a place with no electricity and glue-sniffing gangsters lurking in the alleys after dark, crime is rampant. Bio-gas has helped reduce crime in the few areas where electricity is distributed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe human waste producing electricity for a streetlight can force the criminals at least a little
