Wide of city in sand, tilt down to wide of traffic\u003cbr/\u003eSpring sand storms have proved a real problem for Beijing residents this year and experts predict the polluting dusty winds would continue as Beijing gears up to hold a green Olympics in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican Environmentalist Lester Brown told reporters in Beijing on Tuesday that sand storms whipped up in western China and the deserts of Inner Mongolia would continue unless livestock numbers were reduced to let grasslands expand.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Unless China substantially and dramatically reduces its number of livestock, there is not going to be any way of stopping the process (sand storms) and it's just going to continue,\" Brown told reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eBrown, a former New Jersey tomato farmer, is president of the Earth Policy Institute. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has served as an analyst with the US Department of Agriculture and as an adviser to the Secretary of Agriculture on foreign agricultural policy. \u003cbr/\u003eHis article on China's food security \"Who will feed China?\" raised heated debate in China 11 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Brown, the main reason for China's choking sand storms is over-grazing and the loss of government control of family grazing in rural areas.\u003cbr/\u003eEight sandstorms so far have swept into the Chinese capital Beijing this year, leaving skies hazy and the city blanketed under a film of ochre-coloured dust.\u003cbr/\u003eAll over the city, residents and workers can be seen dusting building and monuments and hosing down cars and walk ways when sand storms hit.\u003cbr/\u003eAsked to comment on efforts to host a Green Olympics in 2008, Brown said it's going to be very difficult.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The government of China may do something extreme like banning the use of all automobiles during the Olympics.
