MS models leaving house\u003cbr/\u003eThe fashion industry is notoriously narrow-minded.  Skinny, icy blondes stalk the world's catwalks, and there is little variation from country to country.  But in Australia, a new model agency is breaking the mould.\u003cbr/\u003ePeggy Carter and Angela Renouf are Aborigine models represented by the Jinnali agency, which was formed last year, and features exclusively indigenous girls.  Amazingly, it's still rare to see the first, real Australians in magazines or on catwalks, but things are changing slowly.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company was formed after a chance meeting between its founders Dina Paulson and Liza Fraser-Gooda, who both harboured the dream of starting Australia's first indigenous modelling agency. \u003cbr/\u003eJinnali has since grown, with 15 girls on their books from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Thursday Island. \u003cbr/\u003eCosmopolitan recently ran a fashion spread entirely featuring Jinnali's Aboriginal models - and they're proud of it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe photo shoot - highlighting clothes from top Australian designers - got a great response, and the magazine plans to use more indigenous models.\u003cbr/\u003eJinnali, which means 'full moon' in Aboriginal, initially advertised for models in the Aboriginal newspaper the Koori News.  The agency, and its models, are inspired by Australia's first Aboriginal model, Elaine George, who is currently retired after having a family.  She was the first Aboriginal model to grace the cover of Vogue, though she failed to achieve a  high profile within the industry.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith Australian Fashion Week gearing up for May sadly, it seems, you're still unlikely to see the first, real Australians gracing the catwalk.  Jinnali is still trying to convince many of the top fashion houses to use their girls.  Instead, many Australian designers will import high profile international face such as Jodie Kidd and, in the past prefer models such as Naomi Campbell or Sophie Dahl over and above using true local talent such as indigenous models. \u003cbr/\u003eNaomi Campbell is one of only a tiny handful of black women to reach supermodel status, and she recently pointed out the lack of indigenous models whilst visiting Australia. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the launch of the agency in December, Jinnali released a calendar of its models.  Normal calendar shots feature stereotypical images of scantily-clad babes on beaches.  However, cultural sensitivities dictate that Aboriginal models may not be able to do some assignments such as pose nude or pose in revealing outfits - certainly not without the permission of their Aboriginal elders, for whom they have great respect.  For the very same reason, when on a shoot the models stay in Dina and Liza's house in Brisbane because they want to continue to maintain a supportive family atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are looking forward to shortly introducing male models onto their books as well are continuing their motivation speeches and grooming seminars in schools.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough very new, Jinnali is already a success, and is heading overseas to market the unique look of their models.
