Wide shot of cameras facing St. Peter's Basilica\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's media are now in position at the Vatican to cover a news story that has been years in the planning: Pope John Paul II's funeral on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the extensive preparation, the funeral will be a massive logistical challenge for both the media - and the Italian government which has to provide enough security measures to protect the world's leaders and an expected two (m) million pilgrims.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of journalists, TV correspondents and technicians have already set up camp in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eFor days, the pontiff's death has dominated front-page headlines and 24-hour coverage on television and radio stations.\u003cbr/\u003eSatellite trucks, cables and cameras litter the streets leading up to the Vatican where media crews have occupied every available space it is permitted to use.\u003cbr/\u003eA special stage has already been constructed from which foreign correspondents can simultaneously conduct live reports and interviews to viewers back home.\u003cbr/\u003eCamera operators can also keep a lookout from the stage for cardinals and other dignitaries entering or leaving the Vatican.\u003cbr/\u003eThe College of Cardinals will gather later this month for a secret vote, known as a conclave, to elect a successor to John Paul II. It will draw the biggest media presence in Rome ever for a conclave.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the current focus of the world's media is the funeral later this week of Pope John Paul II - an event that is expected to draw a worldwide TV audience of millions.\u003cbr/\u003ePolish journalist Jaroslaw Kulczycki who is in Rome to cover the the pope's death, said he remembered how the strictly-controlled Polish media covered the news of polish-born John Paul II's election as pope in 1978.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At that time there was a single national, broadcaster controlled by the communist party\" he said, \"and they informed about that with a significant delay because that was a very inconvenient situation for them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said when the government later allowed John Paul II to visit his home country in his new role, \"there was a massive propaganda against the church and against the pope\".\u003cbr/\u003ePope John Paul II's funeral will be held on Friday morning, and his remains will
