Like the Globes, the DGA awards are also considered to be a barometer of the Oscar nominations and this year it seems so-called \"independent\" films reign supreme.\u003cbr/\u003eThe directors of \"American Beauty,\" \"Being John Malkovich\", \"The Green Mile\", \"The Insider\" and \"The Sixth Sense\" were all nominated for the Directors Guild of America award.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first-time nominees announced were \"American Beauty\" director SAM MENDES,- who also won directing honors at the Golden Globes where the film picked up the best film and best screenplay awards-,SPIKE JONZE for \"Malkovich\" and\u003cbr/\u003eM. NIGHT SHYAMALAN for \"The Sixth Sense\".\u003cbr/\u003e'Being John Malkovich' already proved popular earlier this month when it picked up three awards at the New York Critics award including best supporting actress for CATHERINE KEENER, best first feature for Jonze and best supporting actor for JOHN MALKOVICH himself.\u003cbr/\u003e FRANK DARABONT of \"The Green Mile\" was nominated in 1994 for \"The Shawshank Redemption\", another prison film also based on a STEPHEN KING story.\u003cbr/\u003e MICHAEL MANN of \"The Insider\" got his first DGA nomination for a feature film. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1979, he won small-screen DGA honors for the TV movie \"The Jericho Mile\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe Insider- which also received the blessing of the LA Film critics earlier this month with 3 awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (RUSSELL CROWE) and Best Supporting Actor (CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER)-is a hard-hitting drama about malpractices in the tobacco industry. \u003cbr/\u003eThe DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film has traditionally been a near perfect indicator for the Best Director Academy Award. In fact the DGA has only differed from the Oscars in it's choice of best director four times since its inception in 1949. The exceptions proved to be ANTHONY HARVEY, who in 1968 won the DGA for \"The Lion In Winter\" but was pipped to the Oscar post by CAROL REED for \"Oliver!\" ;\u003cbr/\u003eFRANCIS FORD COPPOLA and his classic, \"The Godfather\" lost out to BOB FOSSE and \"Cabaret\" in 1972 ; STEVEN SPIELBERG' ( \"The Color Purple\") who was beaten by SYDNEY POLLACK for \"Out Of Africa\" in 1985; and in 1995, RON HOWARD, who was awarded a DGA for \"Apollo 13\" but lost out to MEL GIBSON'S \"Braveheart\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe winners will be announced March 11, just weeks before The Academy Awards on March
