It been done for the past three years and it seems quite easy to perform. team of veterinarians inserted a titanium screw into each of her ankles. \u003cbr/\u003eRome Zoo's baby Giraffe Esperanza is a popular attraction at the zoo. \u003cbr/\u003eBorn last summer (August 13, 2006)  she quickly became one of the park's stars. \u003cbr/\u003eBut recently zoo keepers noticed that she had problems walking. \u003cbr/\u003eThey noticed a malformation on Esperanza's front legs and found that her front hooves were becoming progressively ingrown.  \u003cbr/\u003eZoo officials say this is a common problem in horses but practically unheard of in giraffes.  \u003cbr/\u003eKlaus Friedrich, the zoo's veterinarian decided that if they did not operate on her legs, she risked being lame in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eOn May 25th 2007, a team of veterinarians performed the operation and inserted a titanium screw  4.5 millimeters in diameter and 7cm long in each ankle.\u003cbr/\u003eFriedrich says the operation was risky because Esperanza had to undergo total anaesthesia, which can create problems due to the complicated blood circulation system in giraffes.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the surgery is normally done on horses and vets will know if the operation is successful within two months. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is difficult to find an operating table large enough for even a baby giraffe, so the zoo's veterinarian team lay Esperanza on a sheet on the ground and crouched around her has they drilled and put the titanium screws in her bones.\u003cbr/\u003eZoo officials say that if Esperanza had been living in the wild she probably would been eventually abandoned by her mother or fallen victim to predators.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Esperanza is now walking tentatively around her garden area and happily suckles from her mother.
