It was just seeing if we were anything edible, seeing if he was able to feed on us. Once he found out we weren't edible he decided to go away and roll around a bit in the snow and he's currently swimming about a hundred meters in front of the boat trying to find a seal. \"\u003cbr/\u003e37. Arctic because of the melting of their sea ice habitat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WWF says that in order to save the charismatic species, immediate action must be taken to halt global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Environment Programme says the world's ice and snow is shrinking - and it's mainly due to global warming. \u003cbr/\u003e15 percent of the earth is covered by ice and snow, glaciers, permafrost and frozen lakes. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the summer ice cap is about 20 percent smaller today than in 1978 (UN climate panel reported February 2007). \u003cbr/\u003eSummer sea ice in the Arctic shrank to a record low last year to nearly 40 percent less than the long-term average between 1979 and 2000.  \u003cbr/\u003eIf this trend is not reversed, the affects on Arctic wildlife may be catastrophic, according to Dr Neil Hamilton, Director of WWF's Arctic Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eHe compares the disappearance of sea ice to the deforestation of rainforests saying \"You can't have all of the biodiversity without the life-support system. \". \u003cbr/\u003eEighteen young students, WWF Ambassadors for the Future, are currently on an Arctic voyage around northern Norway to learn more about the effects of climate change on the fragile ecosystem.\u003cbr/\u003eThe birdlife on the archipelago is rich and impressive, with three million pairs of seabirds breeding in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200 bird species have been recorded in the area. \u003cbr/\u003eLittle auks, razorbills, guillemots and kittiwakes are commonly found here, however scientists are concerned that changes in temperature may drive such species away from the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe polar bear is the world's largest land carnivore, an animal native to the Arctic. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bears depend on sea ice for survival. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have their pups and they hunt seal and walrus on ice floes. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd as sea ice shrinks, bears are forced to hunt and to fast for longer periods. \u003cbr/\u003eThe melting ice flows are barely strong enough to hold their vast weight, but there is just enough left of it to hunt from. \u003cbr/\u003eThe WWF says that if current sea ice trends continue, two-thirds of the world's polar bears will be lost by the middle of the century.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sighting of a polar bear by the WWF Ambassadors earlier this week caused much excitement, even amongst seasoned scientists.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Appy Sluijs from the University of Utrecht says that the waters of the Arctic have been ice-free before - 55 million years ago and hippos and crocodiles swam in these seas. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that sub-tropical period was also caused by a significant amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Interior Department scientists in a series of reports last September concluded that continuing melting of sea ice will lead to a two-thirds decline in polar bears by mid-century, meaning the disappearance of at least 15,000 bears.  \u003cbr/\u003eLast month the US government finally listed the polar bear as an endangered species, citing climate change as one of the main threats to the bear's future existence.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many say that without addressing the underlying causes of climate change there may be no way to save this most popular symbol of the Arctic.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 25,000 polar bears are estimated to roam the Arctic region from Russia and Alaska to Greenland. \u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
