on a moving New Delhi bus arrived at Saket District Court Complex in New Delhi to appear in court. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cases of the five men were expected to be shifted to a fast-track court at the hearing, defence lawyers said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hearing had been set for last week but was rescheduled when it turned out that the official list of charges was not completely legible.\u003cbr/\u003eFive men have been charged with the December 16th 2012 attack on the 23-year-old student, who died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eA sixth suspect, who says he is 17 years old, is likely to be tried in a juvenile court if medical tests confirm he is a minor.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack outraged Indians, leading to massive protests and calls for tougher face the death penalty.\u003cbr/\u003eOn February 5th the trial of five men accused of the fatal gang rape of a woman in a moving bus in New Delhi continued, with the court set to begin hearing evidence from witnesses.\u003cbr/\u003eA white bus, believed to be the vehicle in which the December 16th gang rape occurred, was also brought into court as evidence.\u003cbr/\u003eOn February 2nd, the men pleaded not guilty, according to one of their lawyers.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were formally indicted in a special court on 13 charges, including rape and murder.\u003cbr/\u003eIf convicted, the five men, who are in their 20s and 30s, could face the death penalty.\u003cbr/\u003eA sixth suspect, who is 17, will be tried in a juvenile court and could face a maximum sentence of three years in a reform facility if convicted.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice say the victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding a bus December 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie. \u003cbr/\u003eThe six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say.\u003cbr/\u003eOn February 21st hundreds of demonstrators gathered near India's parliament in New Delhi to protest against a new sexual violence law they say is inadequate in dealing with crimes against women.\u003cbr/\u003eFebruary 21st's protest was held as India's parliament met for the start of a months-long budget session.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters said the law only partially followed the recommendations of a government panel set up after the fatal gang rape of a woman in New Delhi two months ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe December 16th gang-rape set off nationwide protests, sparking a debate about the treatment of women in India and highlighting the inability of law enforcement agencies to protect them.\u003cbr/\u003eSinging songs and playing musical instruments, the protesters said they will continue their campaign for a more comprehensive anti-rape law.\u003cbr/\u003eA government panel set up after the outcry over the gang rape and weeks of street protests by students and women examined India's criminal justice system's treatment of violence against women. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter examining more than 80,000 submissions, the panel, headed by retired Chief Justice JS Verma, came out with a 630-page report recommending amendments to the laws governing crimes against women.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new law has increased punishments for rape from the existing seven to 10 years to a maximum of 20 years. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also provides for the death penalty in extreme cases of rape that result in death or leaves the victim in a coma. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has also made voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law. \u003cbr/\u003eBut women activists have accused the government of ignoring many key suggestions of the panel.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say the new law doesn't deal with the issue of marital rape or sexual violence against women by armed forces personnel in conflict zones that had been recommended by the government commission. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new law also ignored the panel's recommendation to bar politicians facing rape charges from contesting elections.\u003cbr/\u003eKavita Krishnan, a women's rights activist, said the government must also provide the budget for funding rehabilitation programmes for victims of rape and other violent crimes. \u003cbr/\u003eThough the new anti-rape law has already taken effect, it needs to be passed by Parliament within six months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it intends to hold consultations with political parties and lawmakers before passing the
