a rare chance for locals, and tourists alike, to watch and enjoy five days of elaborate events.\u003cbr/\u003eBhutan, the land of the thunder dragon, may be changing with the times, but deep inside the country it fiercely guards its culture and traditions. \u003cbr/\u003eMen and women are expected to wear the traditional dress in public, though young men are seen in western attire increasingly.\u003cbr/\u003eTelevision and the internet came to this tiny kingdom as late as 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eThe capital, Thimphu, still has just one cinema hall which runs Bhutanese films. \u003cbr/\u003e2008 is a significant year for Bhutan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Buddhist kingdom has just held its first-ever democratic polls and later this year it will celebrate the coronation of its fifth King - Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck.\u003cbr/\u003eThough the fifth King took charge in December 2006, he has yet to be formally crowned.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is also this year that the monarchy completes a century in Bhutan. \u003cbr/\u003eBut amidst all the changes seeping through, Bhutan and its people remain deeply religious and spiritual, as witnessed at the recently-held Paro Tsechu (religious festival).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Paro tsechu is supposed to be the biggest and most colourful of all the festivals in Bhutan. \u003cbr/\u003eChencho Dorji, a tour guide, says the festival last for five days and is held inside the local fortress.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight of the festival is the unfurling of the centuries-old thongdrel, an embroidered tapestry depicting the ninth-century Buddhist teacher Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava on the last day. \u003cbr/\u003eGuru Rinpoche introduced tantric Buddhism to Bhutan. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is unfurled around 3 am local time and folded back around 7.30 am local time. \u003cbr/\u003eLeki Dorjee, a young local resident, says this an opportunity for tourists to learn about their religion.\u003cbr/\u003eWhereas Galem, another local resident, says it's a day to see the Buddhas together.\u003cbr/\u003eTradition has it that viewing of the thongdrel is auspicious for visitors and bestows good karma. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the thongdrel is carefully folded back, it is carried to the dzong, or fortress, nearby where it stays hidden till the next year. \u003cbr/\u003eWhat follows are dances and dramas that depict the history of Buddhism and the lives of the Buddhas. \u003cbr/\u003eMonks from the monastery don colourful costumes, bring out musical instruments, and carry out a centuries-old performance that has remained unchanged through the ages. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Bhutanese turn up for the festival in their colourful, hand-woven dresses. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is their belief that the festival brings them happiness and good luck. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the foreign tourists, it is an overwhelming experience. \u003cbr/\u003eOne tourist, Colleen Maier, says the costumes are fabulous and the atmosphere is exiting.\u003cbr/\u003eColin Yule, another tourist, says it's a riot of colour.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the day's celebrations draw to an end, the dancing increases in
