on Ash Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eHe, in turn, placed ash on the heads of cardinals. \u003cbr/\u003eThe event ended on a note of high emotion as cardinals removed their hats as a gesture of deep respect.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pope stood with his hands together to acknowledge sustained applause from the congregation.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the pope made his exit, helped down the altar steps by two aides, the basilica erupted in a standing ovation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ash Wednesday mass is normally held at a church elsewhere in Rome, but was switched at the last minute to St Peter's.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican said this was to accommodate the larger crowds expected as a result of the Pope's decision to resign. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it also spared the Pontiff from the traditional procession from St Peter's to the church. \u003cbr/\u003eAsh Wednesday marks the start of Lent, the most solemn season in the church calendar that ends with Holy Week, when the faithful commemorate the death of Christ and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003eBy this Easter, on 31 March, the church will likely have a new
