Scientists hope the pictures will take them a step closer in their quest for extraterrestrial life. The black and white pictures, beamed to Earth barely seven hours after the landing, included a panoramic shot revealing boulders and what appear to be hills on the horizon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pictures, released by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also showed some of the airbags used during the landing procedure, and the solar panel of the robot vehicle that was scheduled to drive across Martian soil.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists have yet to decide when to release Sojourner, a small, six-wheeled robot that will drive around the probe at a distance of several dozen metres, snapping pictures with three cameras and measuring the chemical composition of the ground and rocks with a spectrometer.\u003cbr/\u003eThey appear unfazed by minor mishaps such as the incomplete deflation of an airbag that will delay Sojourner's deployment for more than 12 hours. The partially-filled airbag is blocking the deployment of a small ramp the Sojourner will need to drive onto the planet surface.\u003cbr/\u003eThe landing site in the Ares Vallis basin was chosen in part because it is located at the mouth of an ancient river.
