2001.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's elections were called after parliament failed in two votes to elect a successor to outgoing President Vladimir Voronin, the leader of the Communists, who has served the maximum two terms in office.\u003cbr/\u003eMoldovan election official Eugeniu Stirbu, speaking at a news conference, confirmed that with 98 per cent of the vote counted, the opposition had 50.9 per cent to the Communists' 45.1 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eOpposition leader and head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM), Vlad Filat, said his party had won a great
