Wide of Port Kavkaz\u003cbr/\u003eWork continued on Wednesday to minimise the environmental damage from an oil spill in the Kerch Strait between Russia and Ukraine after a storm that sank at least 11 ships and split an oil tanker in two over the weekend, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials called the break up of the tanker an \"environmental disaster\" for the region and warned that the 2-thousand metric tons (560-thousand gallons) of spilled fuel oil could cause long-lasting damage to marine life.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 30-thousand birds have been killed.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the clean up effort moved up a gear on Wednesday, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said they estimated one quarter of the petroleum products spilt into the waters had so far been recovered.\u003cbr/\u003eHigh winds had prevented salvage teams from launching an effort to sweep the oil off the water's surface, allowing patches of the slick residue to drift to the seabed, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eWorking with his team on a beach near the Russian port of Kavkaz, Georgy Sergeyenko, head of the Krasnodar search and rescue detachment, said the winds and rolling waves had now subsided.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Now we have to clean what was thrown to the sea shore, we have a lot of work to do.
