Various of sex workers on the streets of Nairobi\u003cbr/\u003eIn Nairobi the debate about the decriminalisation of prostitution is becoming a major political issue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city''s mayor flirted with the idea earlier this year, but after an outcry by religious groups and some politicians, he was forced to backtrack. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in a city plagued by poverty and HIV/AIDS this debate is unlikely to go away soon.\u003cbr/\u003eVenture into the centre of Kenya''s capital Nairobi at night, and it''s hard to miss the city''s sex workers: women and sometimes men, dressed in short skirts and dancing provocatively - all waiting for trade. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are about 7,000 sex workers in the city of Nairobi, according to a recent study by the mayor''s office, and for most, this occupation is a choice borne of poverty and lack of opportunity. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s a chance to feed their children and send them to school, in a country where the average income is less than $70 USD a month.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut it''s also a potentially deadly profession. Estimates of HIV prevalence among sex workers vary, but some studies suggest that at least one in four is HIV positive. \u003cbr/\u003e26-year-old Emma Wangari, is a mother of two and has been a sex worker for seven years. Her job has sustained her small family since her husband left her. \u003cbr/\u003eAside from the income, it gives her the chance to be at home during the day, so she can take her girls to school and help them with homework when they come home. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s a very different life to the one she lives at night. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is what I wear: a dress top with stockings just like this,\" says Emma, holding up her work clothes. \"And if I see that the men are not attracted by this outfit I change and wear a mini skirt and stockings so that they can admire me more and they can call on me.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEmma is HIV positive and has lost one of her daughters to AIDS. She''s now on the free anti-retro viral programme and so far, is symptom free. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she still takes precautions. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If I see someone is insisting to have sex with me without condoms, I tell them that I have AIDS,\" she says. \"There are those who get scared, and then there are those who say that they also have the disease and they try to insist that they must have sex with me by force.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor Emma and the other sex workers in the capital, it''s a tough life. Although they earn enough to survive, it''s no way to get rich quick - Emma and her children live in a slum. \u003cbr/\u003eAt night, the streets of Nairobi are rife with crime, and sex workers are easy targets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe police and city council guards pick on them too, as they practice their trade illegally and are therefore liable to be arrested any time. \u003cbr/\u003eNairobi''s mayor, George Aladwa, had hoped to change this, when he suggested the possibility of legalising prostitution earlier this year. But he was quickly forced to backtrack. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Kenya''s sex workers want more than an acknowledgement that they exist. They are viewed with disdain by church groups and conservative members of the public, and at this demonstration by sex workers asking for prostitution to be legalised, some of the demonstrators were beaten up by outraged city residents. \u003cbr/\u003eEven if prostitution remains criminal, sex workers would like the harassment to stop.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are saying, if sex workers should be arrested, they can be arrested but let them be arrested in a humane kind of way,\" explains Daughtie Ogutu, a founding member of the Kenya Sex Workers Alliance. \"Not mishandling and manhandling sex workers, demanding bribes, demanding sex or forcing them to have unprotected sex.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor 19-year-old Monica Wanja, this is all very new. She started working on the street six months ago, when she needed to get back to work to provide for herself and her baby, but couldn''t find a job. \u003cbr/\u003eShe is not HIV positive but says that the risk is great, especially for women who are poor and need the money. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There some people who say that you go with them without condoms but I really know about my mind if I go with you without a condom, you do not know my status, I do not know yours, so I can''t,\" she says. \"But you get some people saying, I will give you 20K (twenty thousand Kenya shillings), I will give you 30K (thirty thousand Kenya shillings), I will give you 10K (ten thousand Kenya shillings), you go with me without, sometimes you don''t have the money, you may go.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn spite of his about-turn on the legalisation issue, mayor George Aladwa still had his office prepare a report on the problems faced by sex workers in the city. They have also set up some mechanisms for sex workers to lodge complaints against corrupt government officials, be they in the police or the city council.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Things are changing,\" Aladwa says, \"and when things are changing, we have youths coming up with so many ideas, so I know with time, things will change.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut the mayor won''t specify whether that change will happen during his term in office; he has learned to be careful about what he says on camera.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I cannot tell you for now, please, don''t pressure me,\" he told the AP producer who asked him to specify when he thought prostitution might be legalised. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I know when you pressure me you just go tomorrow and write what I have not said. What I know is that things are changing and you will see, you are here,\" insists Aladwa.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s Friday night, Monica is back on the streets and business is booming. Tonight she needs to find at least one customer, if only to make this week''s rent and pay the baby-sitter who''s watching the baby at home. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Prostitution should be legalised,\" she says. \"The answer to that question is, us as street girls, we are here looking for our kids because they need a better future, we also need the better future, we need something to make them to be who they are, maybe the next president.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut to do that, Monica has to break the law.
