Close of Pendharkar riding in taxi through Mumbai streets. \u003cbr/\u003eMillions of people around the world are learning online thanks to a boom in free 'e-classes'.\u003cbr/\u003eRising academic fees and busy schedules are making internet courses an attractive prospect to people wanting to learn something new.\u003cbr/\u003eMythology may be the study of age-old cultures, but this classroom is anything but ancient.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom their campus in Philadelphia, classics professor Peter Struck from the University of Pennsylvania is lecturing to a class too large to fit into one classroom. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 54,000 students around the world are currently taking his popular course in Greek and Roman mythology.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the studio, there's a camera, recording equipment, computers and technical staff to help Struck record lectures and conduct live question and answer sessions with students.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe internet-based courses are known as massive, open, online classes or MOOC for short.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm just here talking to this glass lens, and I'm expecting to give them as animated and as exciting a lecture as I possibly can,\" says Struck.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople around the world are signing up for similar classes in their millions.  \u003cbr/\u003eMOOCs are barely a year old, but they caught on quickly because they're generally free and save time for people hoping to learn a new subject.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're taught exclusively online. Lectures are pre-recorded and uploaded to a web site along with readings, notes and quizzes.\u003cbr/\u003eStudents can go through the material when they have time, and there are online class chat message boards for student discussions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Actually, I save a lot of time, and it helps me to do it as per my convenience,\" says Pendharkar, a mythology student living in Mumbai, India.\u003cbr/\u003eMOOCs were born in a wave of education innovation spurred by the international recession, which has badly effected many countries including Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eFinancial hard times caused many to see traditional university models, with sprawling campuses and tight class schedules, as expensive, flawed and out of reach for many people around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eTechnology plus a drive to democratise higher education resulted in online classes for the masses. \u003cbr/\u003eCoursera and edX are the two main companies organizing MOOC classes, which are offered by elite universities and available in nearly every subject.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow edX has 900,000 students and more than 30 courses. \u003cbr/\u003eCoursera has ramped up to 3.5 million students, 370 courses and 69 partner institutions.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow, roughly 40 percent of Coursera's registered students come from developing countries, as do close to half of edX's. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Netherlands, one of Struck's mythology students Fausia Abdoel says online courses make things easier than they would be in the classroom.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's already an online course. People are behind a computer, and they are talking to each other way more easily I have noticed than people do in, during lectures,\" says Abdoel.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some may expect online learning to be a lonely experience, Struck's classes include Twitter question and answer sessions and Pendharkar says the international classroom adds a different dimension to the learning experience.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It also gives an opportunity for people to interact with their colleagues from all over the world. They gain a perspective. They gain a different perspective. It's a lot more dynamic,\" says Pendharkar.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as students don't earn academic credits through MOOC classes and aren't even considered official attendees at the academic institutions, the reason people enrol are often varied.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I used to have this dream that when I am older and grey and not able to travel so much anymore, to work in the library in maybe Alexandria (Egypt) or in Athens (Greece), and then this knowledge would be useful, I guess. But for just for now it's just for fun,\" says Abdoel. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother student of Struck, Raul Ramos living in Madrid, Spain, says although MOOCS are beneficial, they'll never beat traditional forms of education.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I must say that I don't understand very well what is the objective over the long term of the MOOCS. I have done other long distance courses with different university institutions. Evidently education does have a cost.  It is something that you have to pay for,\" says Ramos.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in Philadelphia, education experts still say the best way to learn is in a small classroom setting with individual attention from a teacher.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Struck admits that even though he misses the personal interaction of traditional teaching, the benefit is that a greater number of people are able to learn something new.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we're here to do as academics is to find out new knowledge and to spread it abroad as widely as we possibly can,\" says Struck.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile MOOCs may not be the best form of education, for students who just want well-taught basic courses online learning certainly fits the bill.\u003cbr/\u003eHaving access to prestigious professors without the $50,000 (USD) price tag is changing what it means to get an education. \u003cbr/\u003eEnsuring that where ever you are in the world, a decent education isn't too far
