Various of people trying to move belongings rescued from flooded homes\u003cbr/\u003eThe death toll from massive floods in northwestern Pakistan rose to 1,100 on Sunday as rescue workers struggled to save more than 27-thousand people still trapped by the raging water.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rescue effort was aided by a slackening of the monsoon rains that have caused the worst flooding in decades in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as flood waters started to recede, authorities began to understand the full scale of the disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations has estimated that one (m) million people nationwide have been affected by the floods, and the scope of the tragedy has strained the resources of a government already grappling with a faltering economy and a brutal war against the Taliban.\u003cbr/\u003eA variety of nations and aid organisations have begun to mobilise a response to the disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States announced on Sunday that it would provide Pakistan with 10 (m) million US dollars in humanitarian assistance, a high-profile gesture at a time when the administration of US President Barack Obama is trying to dampen anti-American sentiment in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US delivered thousands of food packages, four rescue boats and two water-filtration units to the northwest.\u003cbr/\u003eElizabeth H. from the flooding could go even higher since rescue workers have been unable to access certain areas, according to a disaster management official.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost 700 people have drowned in the Peshawar valley, which includes the districts of Nowshera and Charsada, and 115 others are still missing, the official said.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso in Charsada a relief camp has been set up by the Falah-e-Insaniat group, which is believed to be affiliated with the banned Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.\u003cbr/\u003eAn activist for the group, who gave his name only as Saqib, said the group had distributed 100 big pots of food to people who's homes had been destroyed by the floods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe districts of Swat and Shangla have also been hit hard and have suffered more than 400 deaths, according to the head of rescue services for the Edhi Foundation, a private charity.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Swat alone, the floods have destroyed more than 14,600 houses and 22 schools, said the Edhi foundation official. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have deployed 43 military helicopters and more than 100 boats to try to rescue some 27,300 people still trapped by the floods, according to the disaster management spokesman.\u003cbr/\u003eThe military deployed 30-thousand army troops who helped rescue more than 20,700 people, the spokesman said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe floods have caused an acute shortage of fruits and vegetables in the northwest because many of the hardest hit areas were the key centres of production, officials said.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe threat of disease now also
