Various close of installation by Shen Shaomin \"I sleep on top of myself\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's top artists and some of the most talented new comers are on display side-by-side at the annual Hong Kong Art Fair.\u003cbr/\u003eNow in it's fifth year, it connects new buyers and sellers from Asia and the old world art establishment of the US and Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eA large installation of colourful work by octogenarian Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has a prominent place at this event, just as Sotheby's auction house will start an exhibition sale of her work in Hong Kong. \u003cbr/\u003eUsually this convention and exhibition centre is accustomed to less glamorous industrial trade shows - rarely do they attract this much attention.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this week's Hong Kong International Art Fair, ART HK 12, is a high-profile, high-culture event in a city which has long been known more for its freewheeling entrepreneurial drive than its taste for fine art. \u003cbr/\u003eART HK 12's Director Magnus Renfrew explains this show offers a unique venue for the global business of making and selling art:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well this year we have 266 galleries participating from 38 countries. It's a great opportunity for western galleries to engage with collectors from Asia, and a great opportunity for galleries from Asia to really showcase the very best of what their artists are producing,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong's unique freedom of speech - unique in China - means controversial artworks can be displayed here, like this display of letters assembled by China's famous dissident artist Ai Weiwei.\u003cbr/\u003eAi's installation, called \"Cong\", presents more than one hundred letters framed and mounted that Ai received from Chinese official institutions in the wake of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.\u003cbr/\u003eAi had supported activists' efforts to try to find out whether schools had been badly built after many collapsed during the earthquake.\u003cbr/\u003eNearby, a classic Picasso painting hangs on the wall, representing the meeting of the old with the new in Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong represents a \"big pot of gold\" for foreign art dealers, says one gallery director from the US who is showing his wares in Hong Kong this week.\u003cbr/\u003eMichael Findlay points out that art works are part of the market for luxury goods, and Hong Kong has long been a magnet for buyers of luxuries from all over Asia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This art fair is attracting overseas galleries because there is a big pot of gold here, or gathering here, or focused here, and people from the region are used to buying their luxury goods here. So it's only natural that in a highly commoditised culture, which is the one we live in,that there should be an art fair here,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eNumerous examples of famous artists' works at the Hong Kong Art Fair are designed to catch the attention of Asian buyers - long established famous names like Andy Warhol jostle with newer trademarks of the international art market like Damien Hirst.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother art dealer based in the US, Christophe Van de Weghe, says that coming to Hong Kong's art fair is very important for his business, because he gets to meet a lot of people from all over Asia interested in art:\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know, Hong Kong is really a turning place, there is a lot of international, I mean, Asian international people that come here, so for someone like me, who has a gallery in New York, I come here, and I really meet a lot of people from all over Asia, so that's very interesting, and very important for my business,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough recent years have seen a runaway trade in auctions and art sales in Hong Kong, there are concerns that a slowdown in China's economic growth could reduce the money available for this kind of luxury purchasing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut art critic and director of one of Hong Kong's newest art collections, Lars Nittve, disagrees.\u003cbr/\u003eHe points out that art sales don't necessarily follow the traditional boom and bust of the economic cycle, and China's slowdown is still a new prospect which has not yet bit into the behaviour of high spenders:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The art market cycle doesn't normally follow exactly the other economic cycles like stock market or real estate, so I don't think we will see an immediate sort of consequence, and we don't know what the slowdown is like either, that is more prediction than anything else,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the Chinese artists highlighted at ART HK 12 is Shen Shaomin.\u003cbr/\u003eHis series of works \"I Sleep on top of myself\" is showcased in 100 square metres of space, one of ten artists in a similar spotlight at this show.\u003cbr/\u003eShen's animal sculptures, shorn of their feathers and hair, are scarily life-like - although physically fully developed, they appear as newborn. \u003cbr/\u003eART HK12 runs until May 20,
