Wide of \"4 Panes\" from 1967\u003cbr/\u003eA major exhibition dedicated to Gerhard Richter, arguably Germany's most famous artist alive, has opened. \u003cbr/\u003eIt includes some 30 paintings and five at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe art of Gerhard Richter has finally returned home.\u003cbr/\u003eThese works make up the Panorama exhibition, looking back at over five decades of Richter 's works.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're on display in Berlin following a successful exhibition at the Tate Modern in London.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Panorama exhibition includes iconic pictures like \"the Reader.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRichter painted it in 1994. It depicts one of his daughters calmly reading in the sunshine.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother iconic picture is \"Candles\" from 1984.\u003cbr/\u003eMany rock fans know the picture from the album cover of Sonic Youth's \"Daydream Nation\" album released in 1988.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is often argued that Richter is the most important and most expensive German artist alive.\u003cbr/\u003eUdo Kittelmann, the director of the Neue Nationalgalerie, says he is far more important than that.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I would say that he is one of the most important artists in the world, definitely beyond Germany's borders. \"\u003cbr/\u003eStanding in front of Richter's \"4900 colors,\" which spans a whole wall of the gallery, the curator of the exhibition Dorothee Brill explains why Richter is so loved by both the art critics and the public.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You can enjoy the pictures in many different ways. It is possible to enjoy them in a simply passionate way, without the theoretical framework. But, if you want you can also go ahead and analyse the theory behind the paintings.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRichter was born in Dresden in 1932 and was a teenager when the Second World War started.\u003cbr/\u003eHe survived the allied bombing onslaught on Dresden in 1945 that destroyed large parts of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1961, just months before the building of the Berlin Wall, he escaped from the communist East Germany to Dusseldorf in West Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eNotoriously media-shy he rarely gives interviews and very seldom makes public appearances.\u003cbr/\u003eBut at the opening of the exhibition in Berlin, just two days after his 80th birthday, he agreed to take a few questions from journalists.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in his own understated way he approved of the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a wonderful exhibition. A bit expensive maybe, when you hear how much it cost, to build the walls and so on. It is a little bit embarrassing when you find out how much it cost.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the late 1960s and early 1970s Richter became a globally known artist.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his homeland Germany, where he still lives and works, he is considered something close to artistic royalty.\u003cbr/\u003eHe himself takes the attention with a grain of salt.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To be neglected would in any case be far worse...\" he says to applause and laughter.\u003cbr/\u003eRichter has enjoyed a peak in popularity over the last few years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prices for Richter's paintings have increased by 319 per cent over the last four years, far above the average increase in prices, according to Art Market research that follows art prices worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eRichter himself has said that the prices people pay for his art is \"absurd.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut what is it about Richter's painting that makes them so special?\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Kittelmann the paintings have to be seen, it is impossible to describe what makes them unique.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have to look at the paintings yourself. And I'm in total agreement with the artist (Richter) when he says, 'just look at the pictures and don't talk about them so much'.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Panorama exhibition will run through until March
