technology it is also being used for front line military pilots.\u003cbr/\u003eThe man behind the pioneering surgery, and the man responsible for introducing laser eye surgery into the military, is Dr Steve Schallhorn, who has just ended his illustrious military career.\u003cbr/\u003eVision correction surgery - LASIK- is now being performed on aviators on a routine basis, helping with battlefield marksmanship and improving military personnel safety on the frontlines. \u003cbr/\u003eThe man who spearheaded the LASIK programme and a pioneer in refractive eye surgery is Dr. Steve Schallhorn. \u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn served with the U.S. Navy for 30 years as an F-14 top gun pilot, top gun instructor and finally a military ophthalmologist.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the past 10 years he's been providing LASIK corrective laser eye surgery to all military divisions, but it was only in December 2006 that aviators were allowed to undergo the procedure. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was only recently that the technology became refined enough for Schallhorn to use the techniques on military pilots.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Advanced CustomVue LASIK is precise enough for the needs of front line pilots who encounter environmental extremes such as high altitude, dry air, wind blasts and \"G\" forces. \u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn says good vision is vital for military personnel.\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds, glasses and and contact lenses present problems when on a battlefield.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Military members credit the eye surgery with saving their lives in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Nicolas Hight, based at the Miramar Naval Air station, in southern California, fought in Iraq and underwent the surgery in 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says life without glasses is much easier.\u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn says military personnel serving in Iraq found corrective eye surgery greatly improved their marksmanship.\u003cbr/\u003eLieutenant Commander Victor Spears also wanted the surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter surgery in January 2007 Spears says he is thrilled with the results. \u003cbr/\u003eCornea specialist UCLA clinical professor and vision correction surgeon of the Maloney Vision Institute in Los Angeles, Dr. Robert Mahoney is one of the top LASIK surgeons in the USA.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says Schallhorn single-handedly improved safety for all divisions of the military. \u003cbr/\u003eNumerous prestigious awards earned him the respect of the entire military.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Schallhorn has also had his brush with fame - the film \"Top Gun\" (1981), starring the actor Tom Cruise, was based on his career and that of his men. \u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn recently had the chance to be reunited with the screenwriter of \"Top Gun\" Jake Epps after 25 years. \u003cbr/\u003eEpps, an established Hollywood screenwriter who went on to write movie hits such as Anaconda, Dick Tracey, Sister Act and Turner and Hooch, says it was a great reunion because there is history between the two of them. \u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn says he felt the same way.\u003cbr/\u003eSchallhorn's retirement in February 2007 on board the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier ended his illustrious 30 year military
