Here, this entire mountain was covered by a glacier, the glacier of Chacaltaya, that has been lost, the whole back part. And other glaciers will disappear with time. Why? Because they are vulnerable, they are small, they are near inhabited areas, a series of things, including global warming. There are a variety of reasons. We especially want to see the effect that aerosols have. These particles that are transported through the atmosphere from regions like the Amazon when for example there are forest fires or the slash-and-burn fires as we call them, then material like ash, like smoke is transported and can be deposited in the glaciers and can make the glaciers become dark and absorb more radiation. Wide exterior of glacier monitoring station\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers studying the diminishing Chacaltaya glacier in Bolivia inaugurated a United States and European Union-backed climate change monitoring station on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe station will study the effects of greenhouse gases, aerosols and other atmospheric contaminants on the glacier. \u003cbr/\u003eThe laboratory, which is being run by the Higher University of San Andres in partnership with European researchers from the Laboratory of Glaciology and Geophysical Environment and elsewhere, is perched at 5,200 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level on top of the once mighty glacier's remains, around 40 kilometres from La Paz. \u003cbr/\u003eA 2009 World Bank report estimated that the Chacaltaya glacier has lost 82 percent of its surface area since 1982. \u003cbr/\u003eThe glacier was once home to the world's highest ski run. \u003cbr/\u003eDirector of Bolivia's Atmospheric Physics Laboratory Francesco Zaratti said that one of the main goals of the station is to look at the effect of particles put into the atmosphere by human activity.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"We especially want to see the effect that aerosols have,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"These particles that are transported through the atmosphere from regions like the Amazon when for example there are forest fires or the slash-and-burn fires as we call them, then material like ash, like smoke is transported and can be deposited in the glaciers and can make the glaciers become dark and absorb more radiation.
